Hiking event planned at local preservation site

VAN BUREN TWP. — The Bloomington Flying Fish Volkssport Club will host a non-competitive walk on Saturday, June 19, at the Laura Hare Nature Preserve on Valley Branch Road from 9 a.m. to noon.

Walkers can choose between two distances, an easy 5K following an old road and a rugged 10K that goes from the ridge line down to the creek in the valley, then back.

Walk-in registration is open from 9 a.m. to noon on June 19. This hike is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, but dogs on leashes are welcome. Due to limited parking, walkers must park at the Pentecostal Church at the intersection of Valley Branch and State Road 46 East and be shuttled from there to the starting point. The event is free, but donations are welcome.

The preserve is a Sycamore Land Trust property protected forever for the benefit of raptors, songbirds and box turtles. The Flying Fish club is a member of its parent organization, American Volkssport Association. For more information, visit ava.org/events and click on “events.”
