Cecil M. Downs, 78, of Columbus, passed away at 4:18 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2021 at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Cecil was born March 2, 1943, in Jasper, Alabama, the son of Willis Marvin and Billie Ruth LeFan Downs. On April 11, 1964, he married Sharon K. Land.
Mr. Downs graduated from Columbus High School. He joined the United States Air Force on June 14, 1961 and was honorably discharged on June 11, 1965. He worked for Reliance Electric for most of his working life as a machinist. Cecil enjoyed wood working, gardening hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his daughter, Kelly (Ben) Simpson; son, Douglas (Samantha) Downs, both of Brown County; grandchildren, Joshua (Haley) Downs, Benjamin (Marissa) Simpson, Luke (Monica) Simpson, Corey (Kaytlin) Downs, Alyson Simpson, Rebekah Downs, Jake Simpson; great-grandchildren, Skyler Simpson, Charlee Downs and Paisley Downs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon; brother, Jerry Wayne Downs and sister, Vera Renner.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 18 at Garland Brook Cemetery in the Gethsemane section with Gordon Skinner officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, June 17 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. There will be no formal funeral service at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
