SCHOOL NEWS: Board approves staff changes, large grant

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees approved the following on May 20 and June 3:

  • A Community Development grant from the Cummins Foundation for the BCHS Eagle Manufacturing summer program for $20,000. This grant was requested by Dave Redding and will help to keep the summer internship program going this year, teacher Chris Townsend said.
  • The second reading and final reading of the Brown County Schools wellness policy.
  • The 2021-2022 staffing sheet for certified staff, non-certified staff and administrators.
  • A memorandum of understanding between the Brown County Educators’ Association and Brown County Schools for a one-time stipend of $1,500 for all eligible certified staff members as well as $1,000 for all eligible noncertified staff members in appreciate for extra COVID-19 related duties performed during the 2020-2021 school year, to be paid before June 30. This will be paid from the district’s rainy day fund.
  • Sue Thompson and Cheryl Wyman to work the Brown County Middle School 2021-2022 registration Wednesday, July 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at $10 per hour.
  • A resolution of the education fund additional appropriation at the correct rate. When the budget was submitted to the state’s Gateway system it was not updated and the initial submission had inaccurate accounting in the education fund. This resolution corrects that.
  • A memorandum of understanding for the 2021-2022 school year between Brown County Schools and Centerstone for student referrals to school- and/or community-based mental health services, and for the provision of any school-based mental health services by Centerstone.
  • An additional term for Kim Sechler to serve as the Brown County Schools Board of Trustees representative on the Brown County Public Library Board. The term will span from August 2021 to August 2025.
  • A donation of $2,254.78 from the Brown County Intermediate School PTO to the BCIS ECA fund, which will allow the dollars to be transferred for use by students at the new middle school, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.
  • Separating Helmsburg Elementary School after-school care supervisor Erin Harden at the conclusion of the school year. This was not a termination.
  • Separating HES teacher Natalie Van Zuiden at the conclusion of the school year. This was not a termination. Darcy Rund was appointed to replace her, master’s degree Level D, $47,250 with 30 years’ experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2.
  • Separating Josh Sparks as HES physical education teacher and Brown County High School wrestling coach. This was not a termination.
  • Transferring SES paraprofessional Suzie Watson to Sprunica Elementary School special paraprofessional, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Josh Sparks.
  • Appointing SES school counselor/social worker Ben White, master’s Level A, $42,000 per year with zero years’ experience, 184 days full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Paige Wetzel.
  • Appointing BCHS English teacher Cassandra Pontius, bachelor’s degree Level A, $38,000 per year with zero years’ experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Rachel Kearney.
  • Appointing HES teacher Jacob Guernsey, bachelor’s degree Level D, $40,625 with three years’ experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. This is a new position. Guernsey also was appointed BCHS varsity boys basketball coach, Group 1, $6,206 stipend, for the 2021-2022 school year, as a replacement for Matt Roberts.
  • Transferring BCHS part-time custodian Melanie Bartlett to BCHS full-time custodian, 240 days, full-time with benefits, effective June 1.
  • Transferring BCMS English language arts/social studies and mentor teacher Steffanie Davis to SES master teacher, effective Aug. 2.
  • The 2021-2022 BCS support staff handbook.
  • The 2021-2022 BCS administrator benefits handbook.
  • The BCMS 2021-2022 student handbook.
  • Separating BCHS guidance counselor Stephanie Quillen, effective at the end of this school year. This was not a termination.
  • Separating HES preschool teacher Lydia Voland, effective May 28. This was not a termination.
  • Appointing SES special education teacher Allison Freiberg, bachelor’s degree Level A, $38,000 with zero years’ experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Catherine Baum-Newlin.
  • Appointing BCHS social studies teacher Will Connelly III, master’s degree Level A, $42,000 with zero years’ experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Jay Myers.
  • Appointing BCS corporation bus driver William Teague, full-time with benefits, $94 per day, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 4. He is a replacement for Gena Wagler.
  • Appointing BCS corporation bus driver Boyd Emerson, full-time with benefits, $94 per day, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 4. He is a replacement for Marvin Brock.
