TAKE NOTE: Earthquake report; road work delays; health department moves; virtual BCCF report

Did you feel the earthquake last week?

A mild earthquake, centered in Parke County in western Indiana, shook several counties on Thursday afternoon, June 17. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded it at 3:18 p.m., and residents of several other counties — including some in Brown County — reported feeling it slightly, such as pots and pans rattling in the kitchen.

Paving delayed due to rain; bridge project updates

Paving of county roads that was scheduled to start last week was delayed due to rain, Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner reported last week.

AllStar Paving was to begin paving on Becks Grove, Mt. Liberty and Lick Creek roads — weather permitting — on June 14. It was reset for early this week if weather permitted.

The paving is being funded by the $1 million from the state which the county received last year.

Also, Enneking Pressure Cleaning will begin work earlier than expected on redoing the overlays on four bridges, on Sprunica, Christianburg, Lower Schooner and Hurdle roads. Magner reported on June 16 that bridge workers could be in the county by late this week and into early July.

County health department shifts to new building

The Brown County Health Department moved last week to 200 Hawthorne Drive, in the same area as the McDonald’s and IGA, in the old Nashville police station next to the car wash.

This is the office you visit to get septic permits, birth and death records and certificates, and food licenses.

At the end of June, the nursing division, which has been working out of the Brown County Music Center giving COVID-19 tests and vaccinations, also will move to 200 Hawthorne Drive. The clinic at the BCMC is open until June 30, then will be closed July 1 and 2 and reopen on Tuesday, July 5 at the new office.

The phone number at the new office is the same: 812–988–2255. The hours of operation also are the same, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Community foundation awards go on virtually

The Brown County Community Foundation’s Annual Report to the community will streaming from Rainwater Studios on YouTube and Facebook on Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. The program will include a performance by The Hammer and the Hatchet, announcements of the volunteer of the year and the winner of the prestigious John D. Rudd Award, updates about the BCCF’s COVID-19 response, and other items.

The event will be streamed live on the Brown County Community Foundation’s social media channels including Facebook and YouTube. Links will be posted at browncountygives.com.
