FRUITDALE — A 61-year-old Brown County man was flown to a hospital over the July 4 holiday weekend after he crashed his bicycle while being chased by a dog on Hurdle Road.

Police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the 800 block of Hurdle Road just after 9:30 a.m. July 3. Dispatch reported that the cyclist, Frank Wrzalinski, of LaSalle Road, was unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Volunteer firefighters were the first on scene and requested an Indiana University Health Lifeline helicopter, according to an incident report by Sgt. Chad Williams with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. Williams reported seeing Wrzalinski sitting in a chair on the edge of the road.

Two witnesses said they were sitting on their front porch and saw Wrzalinski riding west on Hurdle Road. Their Corgi dog ran out onto the road and began chasing him, the report states. The couple reported seeing Wrzalinski flip over the front of the bicycle and land on the asphalt, the report states.

When they went to check on him, Wrzalinski was unconscious and they called 911. They said Wrzalinski was unconscious for about five minutes. When he woke up, he tried to get up, so the couple gave him the chair to sit in, according to the report.

Wrzalinski denied being in the accident when EMS told him and they believed he had a head injury, requiring transport by a medical helicopter.

He was transported by Lifeline to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.

It was not mentioned in the report if Wrzalinski was wearing a helmet or not.
