SCHOOL BOARD BRIEFS: Board approves policy updates, donations, staff changes

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees approved the following June 24:

  • A donation of $500 from Cummins Foundation for the Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate.
  • A donation of $10,000 from Dollar General Adult Literacy Grant for the jail literacy program.
  • A donation of $5,000 from the National Football League Alumni Inc. for the football ($4,000) and baseball ($1,000) programs.
  • A donation of $15,135 from Laurie Godfrey for the theater department. Godfrey donated the costumes, furniture and props she brought with her from her production company when she began teaching here. After her retirement, Godfrey officially donated those items to the theater department, valued at $15,135, Brown County High School Principal Matt Stark explained.
  • The Brown County High School handbook for the 2021-2022 school year.
  • The elementary school handbook for the 2021-2022 school year.
  • The beginning of the legal steps for a 2021 bond issue. A hearing on the bond issuance will happen at the July 15 school board meeting at 6 p.m. at the high school.
  • An increase of 80 cents for adult lunches and 15 cents for adult breakfasts. The total lunch cost will be $4.50 and breakfast cost will be $2.45. Meal price increases are required as indicated by the United States Department of Agriculture’s paid lunch equity tool.
  • A first reading of updates to the following NEOLA policies: Purpose; employment of the superintendent; controversial issues; employment of professional staff; employment of support staff; nursing mothers; leaves of absence; determination of legal settlement and eligibility for enrollment of students without legal settlement in the corporation, proof of Indiana residency; promotion, placement and retention; required ADM counts for the purpose of state funding and verification of residency for membership; electronic monitoring and recording; property inventory; accounting system for capital assets; staff use of personal communication devices; food service program; and bus drivers and cellular telephone use.
  • Two additional days of work for Brown County Junior High School employee Ronna Snyder prior to the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
  • The use of a Brown County Schools bus by BETA for fields trips to Western Skateland on June 17, Marengo Cave on July 1, Yellowwood State Forest on July 15 and Holiday World on July 29. All expenses for the use of the school bus will be paid for by BETA.
  • Separating BCHS junior varsity volleyball and junior varsity girls basketball coach Daisha Holt, effective June 12. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Brown County Middle School music teacher Rachel Martin, effective June 4. This was not a termination.
  • Separating BCHS math teacher Sean Dorsey, effective June 4. This was not a termination. Ashley Christman was appointed to replace him, bachelor’s degree, Level A ($38,000), with zero years of experience, effective June 2.
  • Separating BCMS Spell Bowl sponsor Jane Phillips, effective May 7. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Helmsburg Elementary School preschool teacher Brandi Lunsford, effective July 1. This was not a termination.
  • Appointing BCHS guidance counselor Bradley Harting, master’s degree, Level A plus 10 extra days ($44,282.60) with zero years of experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Stephanie Quillen.
  • Appointing HES elementary teacher Megan Connelly, bachelor’s degree, Level C ($39,750) with two years of experience, full time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Debra Olson. Olson was transferred to BCMS English-language arts/social studies teacher, effective Aug. 2.
  • Appointing Sprunica Elementary School special education paraprofessional Heath Glover, $11.25 per hour, 29 hours per week, part-time with no benefits, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Suzie Watson.
  • Appointing BCMS special education paraprofessional Amanda Smoot, $11.25 per hour, 29 hours per week, part-time with no benefits, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Felicia Branson.
  • Appointing BCHS social worker Andrea Tinsley, master’s degree Level C $45,500) with two years of experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 2. This is a new position.
  • Appointing BCHS and BCMS custodian Matthew Hobbs, eight hours per day, $12 per hour, 240 days, full-time with benefits, effective July 1.
  • Appointing BCMS mentor teacher Mike Taylor, $4,500 stipend, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Steffanie Davis.
  • Appointing BCHS mentor teacher Kirk Wrightsman, $4,500 stipend, effective Aug. 2. He is a replacement for Jay Myers.
  • Appointing BCHS mentor teacher Kristi Billings, $4,500 stipend, effective Aug. 2. She is a replacement for Dean Keefauver.
