Meeting to be held for bereaved parents

The local chapter of the Compassionate Friends meeting will be Tuesday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St.

Compassionate Friends is a national organization for families who have experienced the passing of a child. The meetings are casual, informative and cover many and all questions regarding the journey of grief.

All family members are welcome to attend. The meeting is for all regardless of the cause of death, circumstances or age of the child.

New interfaith gathering to start this week

All are welcome to an interfaith and interdenominational devotional gathering at the Schultz home, 1963 Greasy Creek Road, on Wednesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. The theme will be “unity.”

The meeting may be held outdoors if weather permits, or inside the open-concept home if necessary.

Light refreshments, water and tea will be served. Participants are asked to bring a favorite prayer, an open heart and a chair.

Dementia training session to be virtual in July

Thrive Alliance will be offering a virtual information session to anyone interested in learning how to become a “dementia friend” and what they can do to make their community more dementia friendly.

Shelby Eggers of Thrive Alliance will lead the session via Zoom on Thursday, July 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. There is no charge, but registration is required. Register at eventbrite.com/e/july-dementia-friends-information-session-tickets-160996726543.

One in 9 people over age 65 have dementia, and about one-half of people over 85 have some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Annual free shopping event returns this month

The annual back-to-school event On the Road Again will be at the Brown County High School Larry C. Banks Memorial gymnasium, 235 Schoolhouse Lane, on Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is hosted by God’s Grace. Guests receive a shopping list at the door. Children can receive gently used outfits, coats, new underwear and socks, a pair of new gym shoes, pajamas, and a bag of personal hygiene items.

Licensed professionals are also onsite to provide haircuts. Personal shoppers are on hand to guide shoppers in making choices, finding correct sizes and carrying selected items.

Brown County Fair happening in person this month

The Brown County Fair will go on in-person the week of July 25 at the fairgrounds in Nashville. Carnival and commercial activities are planned, along with 4-H and Open Class exhibits, food booths, grandstand events, queen and junior royalty contests, the baby contest, and special events like Farm and Fun Day. Free legal aid phone clinic set for this week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, July 27 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on July 27 between noon and 1:30 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

Back-to-school event happening at church

BEAN BLOSSOM — Faith Full Gospel Church, 6881 State Road 135 North, will host its second annual Back-To-School Bash on Saturday, July 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be backpacks filled with school supplies, a bounce house, face painting, a dunk tank, cornhole games, pony rides, a resource table, fellowship, food drinks and more. The event is free and open to all.

Local church hosting community day

New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 North, will host a community day on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome for free food, games, bounce houses, music, giveaways, fellowship and more. Free haircuts will be available for kids.

Many activities scheduled at goat farm

BELMONT — The Goat Conspiracy, 6022 Kent Road, will host a soap-making workshop on Sunday, Aug. 8 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will be able to make a batch of soap, leaving with five bars, and taste goat cheeses. Those interested will also be able to tour the farm and meet some of the goats. The cost is $80 and registration is required.

Goat farm tours are ongoing and can be scheduled at mutual convenience. The cost is $10 per person, $5 for children under 12 with a $35 minimum charge. Tours are about an hour long and must be scheduled in advance.

Community development group meets monthly

HELMSBURG — Helmsburg Community Development is a nonprofit group working to redevelop Helmsburg. The group aims to improve infrastructure, revitalize businesses in the area and bring in new homes and families.

The group meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Brown County Community Church, 2370 W. Main St. in Helmsburg. The next meeting is Aug. 11.

Jeep, motorcycle rally to aid fire department

The Brown County Volunteer Fire Department will have a Red Line Ride fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the local fire department will honor those who lost their lives in the attack with a fundraiser.

The route will begin at the House of Thunder, 4413 State Road 46 East, and travel through Solsberry, Tulip Trestle, Bedford and Story. The event will end with food and music.

The cost is $25 per person and includes one meal ticket. All proceeds go toward the Brown County Volunteer Fire Department. Register by Friday, July 30 for a free commemorative shirt.

Reunion happening at history center in August

The Sturgeon Reunion will be at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., on Saturday, Aug. 14.

The gathering begins at 9:30 a.m. with a future reunion planning meeting. There will be a Brown County history overview program and information about Sturgeons of note — including Sarah Spicer-Hardin, a descendant of Simpson Sturgeon — at 10:30 a.m.

A catered luncheon will be served at 11:45 a.m. The deadline for reservations is Sunday, Aug. 1, the cost is $18 per person for the luncheon portion only.

There will also be an opportunity for a tour of the Pioneer Village at 1 p.m. and directions to a cemetery with Sturgeon family graves.

Virtual information session for caretakers set

Thrive Alliance will have a virtual information session for those interested in the Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) Program on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Volunteers help enhance an individual’s quality of life by making decisions on that person’s behalf which reflect, as much as possible, the individual’s own choices and preferences.

Nashville Farmers Market now open Sundays

The Nashville Farmers Market will be open every Sunday through October from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.

Shoppers can find seasonal produce grown by local farmers, eggs and baked goods. Various meats are also offered. Local growers will sell shrubs, perennials and annuals for shoppers’ gardens.

Local crafters and artists share their talents in a variety of forms: Handwoven goods, soy and beeswax candles and more. Locally made goat’s milk soaps and bath and body products are also available.

The market doubles SNAP and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits up to $10 per shopper per week. Stop by the information booth for details.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale is underway. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.
