Boys and girls from 3 months old to 2 years old grabbed their fishing poles and headed to the Brown County 4-H Fairgrounds on July 17 for the annual Brown County Fair Baby Contest.

The theme was “Gone Fishin,’” so participants decked out in rubber boots, overalls and more as they made their way in front of the judges.

The overall winner and the first place winner of the 2-year old category was Tanner Franks, son of Tiffany Franks. Jim Ackerman accompanied Tanner in the contest.

There were four categories with 12 babies competing. Categories were: 3- to 6-month-olds (boy and girl); 7- to 9-month-olds (girl); 1-year-olds (girl) and 2-year-olds (boy and girl).

In the 3- to 6-month-old categories, one boy and one girl competed: Ruby June Miller and Boone Jacobs both took home first-place prizes.

Only two girls participated in the 7- to 9-month-old category: Harper Shores, who won first place, and Everlee Williams who won second.

Two girls also were the only participants of the 1-year-old category. Harper Jones won first place and Nova Leigh Lambert won second.

Four girls and two boys competed in the two-year-old group:

  • Adley Stargell, first place, girls
  • Olivia McKinney, second place, girls
  • Abigail Heldman, third place, girls
  • Emberlyn Chittum, third place, girls
  • Tanner Franks, first place, boys
  • Elliott Williams, second place, boys

No babies competed in the 10- to 12-month-old category this year. Also, there were no boy contestants for the 7- to 9-month-old or 1-year-old categories.

The first-place-winning babies from each category then competed for the overall winner title.

The judges were Purdue Extension 4-H Educator Katie Finney, 2019 Brown County Fair Queen Shelby Blake and Kasey Evans. Blake handed out ribbons and trophies to the winners.
