VETERANS’ CORNER: More common misconceptions about veterans

By CHRIS SNELL, guest columnist

Thank you to all those who attended the county fair, to those veterans who stopped by to say hello, and to those who have scheduled appointments. We are proud to serve you!

MISCONCEPTIONS OF THE MONTH:

Our office hears a lot of misconceptions when it comes to veterans and we have decided it is time to continue educating the community by sharing what we have heard, because frankly these misconceptions have been going around for too long and you deserve to know better.

“I can’t file for a disability while I’m in the military.” This depends on your status. Are you active duty or are you a reservist/National Guard? If you are the latter, you are allowed to file for a VA service-connected disability. The most important document you need is a medical record from your unit called an LOD, or Limitation of Duty, due to an injury incurred while in service. This is a very credible piece of evidence for reservists and National Guard members.

“There are other veterans that deserve it more than me.” You’re probably right in a sense, but that’s no excuse to not file or at least visit our office to find out more about your benefits. You served, you earned, so come find out more about your earned benefits!

BRANCH BIRTHDAY:

Aug. 4 is the U.S Coast Guard’s birthday. If you’re a Coastie, happy birthday to you! And for your birthday, we present you with the “You might be a Coastie if” segment: You might be a Coastie if after boot camp, you’ve never fired a gun.

On a serious note, we love you, Coast Guard, and we thank our CG veterans for their service to our country!
