Letter: ‘Be relentless’ in pushing for voting law changes

To the editor:

My name is Rebecca Budde, and I am a mother of two new to the area, but not to the state, and not to this fight. I demand Sen. Todd Young (R) to do whatever it takes to swiftly get the For the People Act passed in the Senate and signed into law.

The freedom to vote is under attack by extremist state lawmakers across the country who want to put up deliberate barriers to make it harder to vote — especially for people of color.

The For the People Act must be passed and signed into law before the end of summer to ensure it goes into effect before the 2022 midterms — and before state legislatures can draw hyperpartisan maps to pick their own voters that would shape politics for the next decade.

The Senate must let nothing stand in their way of passing the For the People Act, including the filibuster. The Senate must not leave DC for the August recess before passing S.B. 1, even if that means delaying recess. Recess can wait; our democracy can’t.

If passed before the end of summer, the For the People Act would override new and existing anti-voter laws and ensure fairly drawn congressional districts for the next decade.

This is how we move forward together, assured that our elected leaders govern in our name and deliver what the people need, from pandemic relief to racial justice and climate action. Together, “We The People” can transform our democracy into one that represents, reflects and responds to ALL Americans!

I called and emailed Mr. Young about issues back in February, and it was no surprise that I never received a response. My advice: Don’t go quietly! Be relentless! This is too important.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Budde, Bloomington
