HAMMOND, Ind. — Two boys suffered non-life-threatening injuries when they were shot after school Friday, the city’s mayor said.

The two boys were shot by two other youths outside Hammond Central High School after they were released for the day, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. told WLS-TV.

The mayor said he was at the scene and saw both boys wounded.

The shooters were not in custody, McDermott said.

Police blocked off areas surrounding the school property while they investigate.

A football game that was scheduled for Friday night has been postponed to Saturday.

About 1,900 students attend the school.

Hammond is 18 miles (29 kilometers) southeast of Chicago.
