9/11 memorial bike, walk and run is next week

HELMSBURG — Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, will host a bike ride, walk and run benefit on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack.

The event will be Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. and benefits America’s 9/11 Ride Foundation and the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department. The cost is $25 per person.

Community foundation to host picnic adventures

The Brown County Community Foundation will a series of fundraising events in September.

“Giving Picnics” will take place Saturday, Sept. 11 from 3 to 8 p.m. in several Brown County locations.

Participants can go on an excursion guided by locals or take a picnic to one of BCCF’s recommended locations to explore on their own.

Different packages and meals are available:

Self-Guided Adventure Picnic, $50-100 — Grab a blanket, picnic basket full of goodies from Brown County Inn and pick a spot in Brown County to join friends and family. Pick up your basket at the foundation at 263 N. Van Buren St. This picnic is for two to four people.

Hickory Hill Hike & Explore Picnic Adventure, $200 — Scott and Erika Rudd will lead a hike to an off-the-beaten path, historic orchard and canning factory known as Hickory Hill Orchards, circa 1911. Adventurers will take a 2-mile hike through a section of the Tecumseh Trail with views of an abandoned canning factory owned by the state entomologist in the early 1900s, Benjamin Wallace Douglas. The Rudds will share the history of the orchard and canning factory along the way, as well as other favorite unique Brown County adventure spots. The hike will conclude with a picnic at a place on the Hickory Hill property, appropriately named “Picnic Hill.”

Bike & Paddle Adventure in the Backwoods of BC, $200 — Clint Hammes and John Tiernan will guide participants on a mountain bike ride to a canoe journey, ending with a remote picnic. The mountain bike ride will start with some of the most popular Brown County State Park singletrack. Participants will then head to Yellowwood State Forest along a series of more rarely traveled single and double track trails. A short country road connection to the backwaters of Lake Monroe will lead to canoes and kayaks for a two-hour paddle. Adventurers will be required to provide their own mountain bike (bikes can be rented locally); kayaks/canoes and shuttles will be provided.

Gravel, Wallow and Hereshome Picnic Adventure, $200 — This biking adventure starts at Freeman Ridge and is followed by two options: a 7-mile ride down the gravel Wallow Hollow into town or a 3-mile paved ride down Bear Wallow. Both rides end at Lory Winford’s Hereshome art studio in the middle of downtown Nashville.

Women’s mountain biking weekend planned

Brown County Bikes will host Campside Sessions Women’s Mountain Bike Camp Friday through Sunday, Sept. 10 to 12, at Brown County State Park.

Participants will learn new mountain bike skills from professional coaches and meet other women who share the interest. The cost is $295 and includes guided skills coaching, primitive camping onsite, swag bag, giveaways and more.

The meal plan is $125 and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner for Saturday and lunch on Sunday.
