Janet Eileen (Dyer) McCallie

Janet Eileen (Dyer) McCallie, 88, of Brown County, Indiana passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 following brief hospice care at her home.
Janet was born in Kokomo, Indiana, Aug. 23, 1933, the daughter of Lester (Andy) and Louise Dyer. The family moved to Indianapolis a few years later where Janet grew up, graduating from Southport High School in 1951. She met her future husband, Jim McCallie, through the Edgewood Methodist Church where they were both involved in music. Janet played piano and organ and accompanied soloists and the choir. Jim sang in the choir, sang as a soloist and played trombone.
Following high school graduation Janet considered a career in nursing by enrolling for a short time in Indiana University’s nursing program in Indianapolis. Jim was just beginning his career pastoring churches throughout southern Indiana and asked Janet to join him as a pianist to provide music. After a short time this led to their marriage August 17, 1953, and together they continued to serve others through the church throughout their lives.
Janet enjoyed teaching hundreds of piano and organ students over the years wherever they lived. While living in other areas of southern Indiana Janet and Jim were updating an old log cabin on family property in Brown County where they eventually retired and became full time residents. At first they lived in the old log cabin, then built a home on the same property which was completed in 1977. Janet continued to teach piano and organ and play for area churches and community events including a musical at the Brown County Playhouse. She continued to serve others for 10 years as receptionist and administrative assistant with Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville, Indiana.
After 66 years of marriage Jim passed away in 2019. Janet is survived by her son, David McCallie and fiancé, Dianna Greeson, of Brown County, grandson Ruben Nehrt, of Brownstown, IN, brother Paul Dyer of North Carolina, nieces and great nieces in Ohio, Iowa and Texas.
