TOWN NEWS: Council reopens bids for new attorney

Town reopens bids for new attorney

Nashville Town Council has reopened bids to find a new town attorney.

The decision was made after the council received one bid by the original deadline of Nov. 18. The deadline has now been extended to Dec. 16.

The current town attorney, James T. Roberts, announced his retirement to the town council in September. The council advertised a legal notice looking for his replacement after he informed council of his retirement, which will begin in January of 2022.

Roberts was town attorney for 12 years before transitioning to the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office for five years to serve as deputy prosecuting attorney.

He came back to serve as the town attorney at the beginning of this year, at which point he said, “One year of this job.”

One bid was received by the original deadline from local attorney Wanda Jones.

Jones’ bid for town retainer was $750 per month, $150 per hour of additional town attorney services and $20 per hour for paralegal services.

A motion was then approved to reopen the bid window to potentially find more candidates.

Council member Anna Hofstetter said that it was “nothing personal” against Jones, but she thought that the council needed “a good pool of people to choose from, to know we’re making the best decision.”
