Club news for week of Feb. 16

Pioneer Women’s club

The Pioneer Women’s Club hosted a program on Feb. 9 where members learned how to properly measure and cut fabric, what needles and thread to use in sewing and about iron safety.

Vice President Bonnie Bose taught about properly measuring and cutting fabric. She also shared the types of needles and thread used in sewing and the convenience of die-cutting machines and their accuracy. Kathy AmRhein, president of the Evening Star Guild of Columbus, taught iron safety and how to properly clean and care for irons. She shared ironing techniques as well as information on the use of wool mats and when to use sizing, starch and Flatter. Formulas for best press and flatter were discussed and each member took home samples to try. Several, in progress quilting projects were shared after the program.

The next program will be presented Wednesday, March 9. Learning and practicing proper hand quilting will be taught by Lu Brunnemer. Brenda Fowler will discuss how to create a “Disappearing Hour Glass Block.” Members then will work on these blocks to be joined into a quilt in the near future.

The Pioneer Women’s Club functions as a complimentary group within the Brown County Historical Society. They meet each Wednesday at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., from 9 a.m. to noon.

Each Wednesday the PWC has a different focus:

First Wednesday — Members work on their personal projects.

Second Wednesday — A program/lesson is presented.

Third Wednesday — Members work on club projects to place in the gift shop.

Fourth Wednesday — The PWC business meeting is held at 10 a.m., followed by dessert.

The PWC annual Quilt Exhibit will be June 3 and 4 at the Brown County History Center. This year’s raffle quilt was created by Katrina Rose and Brenda A. Fowler.

The club is currently looking for vendors for this event and hope to feature not only fabric vendors, but also those who sell items currently in demand by the general public. Those interested in being a vendor should leave their information at 812-988-2899 and the vendor chairman will contact you.

This Wednesday, Feb. 16, PWC members will be busy working on new merchandise for the gift shop. New table runners, table toppers, wall hangings, quilts, place mats, and more will soon be for sale. They have multiple projects to work on. Those who enjoy sewing and would like to join the fun should join on Feb. 16. Their goal is to have many new items available for purchase when the History Center reopens to the public on March 5.

Interested women are encouraged to call 812-988-2899 and leave their contact information. A member will be in contact to answer any questions and extend an invitation you to visit the club. The PWC membership dues are $10 a year.

The PWC has many opportunities to participate in Historical Society and community events throughout the year. They are always looking forward to developing new friendships, sharing experiences and especially learning from others.
