Painting workshops happening at art guild

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., will host two painting workshops in the coming months.

Artist Luke Buck will demonstrate his watercolor and gouache techniques in a workshop housed at the Guild on March 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Painters of all skill levels are welcomed to the two day experience. Lunch will be catered.

Admission is $225 for members and $250 for non-members.

Artist Rick Wilson will lead an instructional two day workshop at a private location on April 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Painters can explore Brown County’s beautiful landscape with this hands-on experience. Lunch will be catered.

Admission is $250 for members and $295 for non-members.

The Guild winter exhibition and sale along with the “Be Still” special exhibition and sale will be on display through Feb. 26.

Art from multiple award-winning Guild artists will be on display. The “Be Still” exhibit features still life artwork.

Winter hours are Monday through Thursday, by appointment; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Indy Decorative Arts painting retreat slated

Indy Decorative Artists will host a Painting Retreat at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East, from April 10 to 13. The theme will be “Painting on the Beach.”

All are welcome to attend one or several days. Classes, demonstrations, vendors, prizes and treats will all be available.

There will also be a hand-painted and hand-quilted “Churches with Steeples” quilt raffle, with a portion of the profit going to Riley Children’s Hospital and another going to art education.

Check in will be on April 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Classes will occur daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Upcoming events at art gallery

The Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, will host several events and exhibits this year.

The 24th Annual Mabel B. Annis Student Art Competition artwork will be displayed in the gallery between April 9 and May 8, with a reception and award ceremony happening on April 10 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The competition will showcase student artwork from over 14 Indiana schools in seven surrounding counties.

A new major exhibit as part of the gallery’s partnership with the family of Nancy Noel is currently on display at the gallery.

The 2022 gallery event calendar is as follows:

  • January-February: Permanent collection on exhibit
  • March 5-28: Friends of T.C. Steele Exhibit with a reception on March 5.
  • April 9-May 8: Mabel B. Annis Student Art Competition with a reception on April 10.
  • June 10-July 9: Indiana Heritage Arts Exhibition and Sale with a reception on June 10.
  • June 18: “Painting Selma’s Garden” presented by Indiana Heritage Arts and the T.C. Steele State Historic Site
  • July 23-Aug. 21: “Printmakers Get Their Due” with a reception on July 23.
  • Aug. 27-Sept. 25: Nancy Noel exhibition and sale
  • Oct. 1-Nov. 13: Collector’s Showcase “Snowfall” with a reception on Oct. 1

The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Parking and admission are free.

Coming soon to the music center

The Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Blvd., has announced new upcoming performances for 2022.

Martina McBride will perform on Saturday, April 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale at www.browncountymusiccenter.com.

McBride was originally scheduled to perform at BCMC in 2020, but the pandemic forced the cancellation of that show. She has sold over 23 million albums and earned more than 15 major music awards.

Steve Earle and the Dukes will perform on Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale at www.browncountymusiccenter.com.

Earle released 20 studio albums, and his songs have been recorded by artists including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez and more.

Micky Dolenz will perform on April 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at www.browncountymusiccenter.com. Dolenz will commemorate his time with the Monkees while performing their worldwide hits and a few tribute songs.

Darci Lynne will perform on May 6 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at www.browncountymusiccenter.com. Lynne is a singer and ventriloquist, as well as the youngest contestant ever to win NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

Classic rock band America will perform on June 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at www.browncountymusiccenter.com. America is celebrating their 50th Anniversary as a classic rock favorite.

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives will visit the music center on June 23 at 8 p.m. The country music legend is known as one of the genre’s greats.

Upcoming shows at the Playhouse

With the ending of 2021 and the welcoming of 2022, the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., has announced several new shows and performances that will be on stage this year.

“Trial by Jury: An IU Gilbert and Sullivan Society Production” will visit the Playhouse on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Audiences can enjoy a laugh with light opera as Indiana University Gilbert and Sullivan Society presents “Trial by Jury” and a selection of other scenes performed by the students of the IU Jacobs School of Music. Admission for that performance is $18.

Asleep at the Wheel will return to perform at the Playhouse on Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1970, Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. Inspired by Western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has accrued 10 Grammy awards. Admission is $55 to $75.

Juggler Yoder and the Cincinnati Circus will perform at the Playhouse on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. The show will include the best of the big top, including juggling, comedy, acrobats, flying knives, and more. Arrive early at 6:30 p.m. for pre-show fun including face painting and balloon animals. Admission is $32.50 adults. Kids under 18 are free with a paid adult.

On Friday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., The Red Mountain Boys with the Hammer and the Hatchet will visit the Playhouse. This new bluegrass group has taken the Pikes Peak region by storm. Joining them is the four-part vocal bluegrass group, The Hammer and the Hatchet. Admission is $20.

College Band will perform their 40 Years of College Band show on Saturday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. They will share their rocking tunes and smiles at their show, 40 years in the making. Admission is $20.

Andy Gross will visit the Playhouse on Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Gross performs live magic, comedy, and ventriloquism. He has performed in Las Vegas, on cruiseships, at fortune 500 corporate events, and made an appearance on the Ellen Show. Admission is $40.

Grant panelists needed

The Indiana Arts Commission’s Regional Grant Program is looking for citizen grant panelists.

Panelists review all grant applications individually to decide how state funds will be used in their community. They will be able to make connections with artists, organizations and colleagues, learn about ideas and projects, and be part of decision making in the state government.

Requirements of being a panelist are:

  • Providing expertise and advice for applicants.
  • Watching a 30-minute orientation webinar.
  • Eight to 15 hours of reading and scoring applications.
  • One to two hours of discussion on panel day.
  • Advice on how to make programs more effective.
