Apply now for Centra Foundation scholarship

The Centra Foundation is now accepting applications for the Loretta M. Burd Scholarship Program.

Each Centra branch, 27 in total, will award a $2,500 scholarship to a high school senior in the local community. The remaining scholarships will be awarded to adult or non-traditional students who have decided to return to school.

The scholarship may be used to pursue an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or certification from an accredited college, university or technical school.

To qualify for the scholarship, the student or student’s parent or legal guardian must be a member of Centra Credit Union with an account in good standing.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 28 at www.centra.org/scholarships/. Recipients will be announced in April.

Free classes, resources available at CRC

The Career Resource Center, now located at 260 Schoolhouse Lane, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The CRC is closed on Fridays and the weekends.

The Work One office is open for appointments only on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Connect online at in.gov/dwd/19.htm or watch the DWD Video Vault at in.gov/dwd/3436.htm.

A Certified Clinical Medical Assistant course will start on March 1, with classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, contact the CRC.

A Microsoft Windows and Word class will be offered on March 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. Registration is required by March 8. The class is free to the public.

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course will start on April 4, with classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information, contact the CRC.

Ivy Tech enrollment virtual office hours will be held on Tuesdays in July from noon to 1 p.m. at http://link.ivytech.edu/crc-zoom.

BETA programs, teen center open at the YMCA

BETA teen center now meets at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., on Tuesdays that Brown County Schools are in session.

BETA is open from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. for teens in grades 6 to 12 to meet, hang out and participate in activities. Homeschool students are also welcome.

Snacks will be available. Free drumming and keyboard lessons are from 4 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday. Jewelry making is every third Tuesday.

Free guitar lessons are also available.

FAFSA applications open for 2022-2023 school year

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application window for the 2022-2023 school year is now open.

The deadline to submit the application is on April 15, 2022.

The application is required to be considered for many of Indiana’s scholarships and grants.

The FAFSA can be completed online by visiting FAFSA.gov. Students will need the following:

  • Social Security number
  • Alien Registration number (for non-U.S. citizens)
  • Federal income tax returns, W-2s and other records of money earned from 2020
  • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
