Brown County senior athletes recognized with state honors

Two Brown County High School seniors have received state honors after playing hard on the football field and excelling in the classroom.

Kody Walsh and Jack Redding were both awarded the Indiana Football Coaches Association Academic All-State awards for 2021.

This award is given to any senior that has a 3.5 grade-point average or higher, played in 70% of all football games and has an SAT score of 1110 or ACT score of 24 or higher.

“We are proud as a program of these two and their accomplishments on and off the field,” head football coach Colten Sample said.

“Both are hard workers and have set high standards for themselves as students and as athletes which is no doubt why they received this honor. They have set a great example for their teammates and for future players.”

Both Walsh and Redding were voted team captains this past season by their teammates, Sample said.

The seniors were also both selected to the All Western Indiana Conference Football Team.

Walsh was also selected to the Columbus Republic All-Area Team as an honorable mention.

Postseason success

Two Brown County High School wrestlers were regional qualifiers this season: Senior wrestlers Chris Luckey and Brandon Phelps.

Luckey has wrestled for nine years and has earned a varsity letter all four years of high school, according to the high school’s athletic department. He has also earned “Rookie of the Year” his freshman year and the “Hardest Worker” award his junior year.

Phelps has earned a varsity letter all four years of wrestling.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association was in Jeffersonville on Feb. 5. Brown County did not advance out of the regional.
