GUEST OPINION: Veterans Service Office helps vets, families secure benefits, find resources

By CHRIS SNELL, guest columnist

Welcome to March! The Veterans Services Office is devoted to applying the fundamentals of our mission and vision statement to the veterans and their beneficiaries of Brown County.

Please read the below mission and vision statements provided by the Brown County Veterans Services Office.

Mission: Serve the veterans, veterans’ dependents and veterans’ survivors of Brown County by offering assistance with filing claims for Veterans Affairs federal benefits, obtaining military records, accessing VA services and conducting education and outreach services.

Vision: Fostering thankfulness to our veterans and their families.

The Brown County Veterans Services Office applies these statements in everything we do to ensure each client has a unique experience with our office. It is my duty as the county veteran service officer to serve all our veterans and their beneficiaries in the capacity of our mission statement and in the heart of our vision statement.

The county Veterans Services Office is a local county government office and is not a VA federal Office or a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

At times, there are additional services that veterans and their beneficiaries need that the Brown County Veteran Services Office cannot or does not provide due to limited capabilities. During these times the office collaborates with volunteers, local community organizations and our veterans service organization partners. We provide resource information that connects you — the veterans or beneficiary — directly to those partners to ensure you can get to what you are desiring or needing.

Partnerships in action

We have recently developed a partnership with the Brown County Community Corrections that will enable veterans within the corrections system to access benefit services provided by the Veterans Services Office.

In this continuum of care, we can provide an opportunity to reduce recidivism rates by assisting veterans access to VA health care and other VA benefits they may be deserving of.

Fostering thankfulness

We want to thank all the veterans and the citizens of Brown County for being supportive of this office.

We also want to extend our thankfulness to our Brown County Veterans Coalition for being a supportive, collaborative unit. All veteran service organization commanders within the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Brown County Honor Guard, Vietnam Vets, to include our Brown County Veterans Service Office, to come together quarterly to discuss organizational updates and support for one another.
