BRIGHT SPOT: Pair of local women recognized for picking up trash alongside highway

Last week, two residents were recognized by the Brown County Recycle Center after they picked up over 30 bags of litter along State Road 135 South

The recycle center shared a photo of Jacquee Henry and Geneva Gill after they picked up 34 bags of trash along the state highway. The duo has been picking up litter and trash in the southern end of the county, as needed, for several years, said Brown County Solid Waste Management District Director Phil Stephens.

The solid waste department and Keep Brown County Beautiful organize the Adopt a Road program. Anyone can adopt a road for litter pick-up four times per year.

As of 2022, there are about 75 Adopt A Road participants in Brown County.

The recycle center provides trash bags, grabbers, gloves and orange vests for anyone wanting to head out to pick up trash along local roads.

“Litter is a huge problem here,” Stephens said.

Those interested in joining the Adopt A Road program can find more information and fill out an application at browncountyrecycles.org/how-you-can-help.

Spring cleaning will continue in the next few weeks as Keep Brown County Beautiful, in conjunction with Cummins volunteers, will conduct roadside litter and property clean-ups.
