Club news for week of April 27

Pioneer Women

The Brown County Historical Society’s Pioneer Women’s Club will participate in many events next month.

On May 7, The Pioneer Women All Stars will be on board the Nashville Express in the Spring Blossom Parade. They will also be selling chances on their 2022 Raffle Quilt and three Treasure Baskets on the northeast corner of Van Buren and Gould streets.

On May 14, PWC will participate in “Spring Into Art” at the History Center. Merchandise from various vendors will be available for purchase in the Howard Hughes Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On May 21, members will participate in the first Hambone Antique Truck and Tractor Show. In and around the Pioneer Village will be able to view Trucks and tractors will be in and around the Pioneer Village. Visitors will also get to meet the winners of this event. The Historical Society will sell lunches and PWC will be selling desserts. During this event one can purchase chances on the 2022 Raffle Quilt and three Treasure Baskets. The drawing for these items will be June 4 at 4 p.m. at the conclusion of the PWC Quilt Exhibit.

On April 20, quilting artist Julia Crawley presented a lesson to the club about the tube cutting method to prepare fabric pieces for quilting. She displayed a table runner and quilt using this method.

Following the lesson the PWC honored Janice Amidon with a reception. Amidon served as a nurse in the Army for 20 years and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was one of 80 veterans on this past Saturday’s Honor Flight to Washington D.C. She shared details of her wonderful trip with club members.

The Pioneer Women’s Club functions as a complementary group within the Brown County Historical Society. They meet each Wednesday at the Brown County History Center, 60 E. Gould Street from 9 a.m. until noon. Interested women are encouraged to call 812 988 2899 and leave their contact information. A member will be in contact to answer any questions and extend an invitation to visit the Club. PWC membership dues are $10 a year.

Bluebird club

The Brown County Bluebird Club is again offering fully-assembled cedar bluebird nest boxes for $15 each or two for $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.

Veterans organizations

Veterans service organizations of Brown County have various meetings throughout the month, all meeting at the Veterans Hall, 902 Deer Run Lane. The Veterans Hall is a government facility and is alcohol free.

Vietnam Veterans of Brown County meet on first Wednesdays. The next meeting is May 4 at 7 p.m.

Veterans of Foreign Wars meet on second Thursdays. The next meeting is May 12 at 7 p.m.

American Legion meets on third Wednesdays. The next meeting is May 18 at 7 p.m.

Historical society

The Brown County Historical Society holds informative and educational meetings throughout the year, and members receive a quarterly society newsletter and a monthly archives e-journal.

Membership is $10 for students, $20 for individuals and $35 for families.

General membership meetings are pitch-in dinners on the first Monday of every month, in the History Center’s Grand Hall, 90 E. Gould St., at 6:30 p.m. A brief business meeting follows dinner with a historically themed presentation afterwards.
