Activities, events on deck at library

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will host several activities and events this month.

BCPL Craft Club will meet on Wednesday, April 27 at 6 p.m. Adults and teens 13 and older will make Crepe paper spring flowers. All tools and materials are supplied. Registration is required at browncountylibrary.info/craft-club.

A virtual poetry reading with poet Ross Gay will take place on Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m. Those interested will have three ways to watch: in the library, on Zoom or on Facebook Live. Visit browncountylibrary.info/ross-gay for registration details.

The Friends of the Library Annual Plant Sale will occur on Friday, April 29 from 2 to 6 p.m. and April 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A large selection of plants, as well as trees will be available. Cash or checks will be accepted. The Friends are also accepting donations of yard art and gently used garden tools to be included in the sale. The lower level parking lot will be closed until May 20 for construction of the power-producing solar panels in that area.

Free legal aid phone clinic set this month

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, April 26 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on April 26 between noon and 2 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

The next Legal Aid Phone Clinic is on Tuesday, May 10 with the same registration requirements and time frame.

Drive-thru pantry planned this month

MORGANTOWN — A drive-thru pop-up food pantry will happen on Wednesday, April 27 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., or while supplies last, in the Unity Baptist Church parking lot, 7361 Spearsville Road.

The pop-up was rescheduled from Feb. 2 due to inclement weather. For questions or if delivery is needed, call the Brown County COAD Hotline at 812-988-0001.

Those in need of a ride to the pantry can call Brown County Access at 812-988-0185.

There are also other food pantries in the county who are available to help:

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry: Mondays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon.

Salvation Army Food Pantry: Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

North Salem United Methodist: First Thursday of each month from 1 to 2 and 6 to 7 p.m.

Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen: Hot meals daily, 4 to 6 p.m.

St. David’s Episcopal Church Giving Box: Emergency food box available 24/7

The Pentecostals of Nashville: Thursdays, 5 to 7 p.m.

Thrive Alliance vendor fair slated

COLUMBUS — Thrive Alliance is sponsoring a free vendor fair on Wednesday, April 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Donnor Center, 739 22nd St. in Columbus.

The vendors will represent a range of providers offering products catering to mostly older populations, those planning for their later years, family caregivers and the disabled.

Participating vendors are: Adaptive Nursing, Assurance Health Hospital, Caregiver Homes, Comfort Keepers, Crown Pointe Senior Living, Family Chiropractic and Wellness, Findley Law, George’s Pharmacy and Medical Equipment, Griswold Home Care, Healing Hands PSA,Help at Home, Independence Home Health LLC, Indiana Anthem Medicaid, Just Friends Adult Day Services, Majestic Care of North Vernon, MedScope, Morning Pointe of Franklin, My Mobility, Older American Services Corp., Premier Hospice and Palliative Care, ResCare, Seymour Crossing, Silver Oaks Health Campus, Together Homecare, Williams Bros. Healthcare Pharmacy and Willow Crossing Health and Rehabilitation.

The fair is free and open to the public.

Fundraiser in memory of local man

The community is invited to a fundraiser in memory of local man and Brown County High School 1986 graduate Brad Pittman. Pittman passed away March 12 after a battle with cancer.

All are welcome at Mike’s Music & Dance Barn, 2277 State Road 46 West, on Sunday, May 1 to share memories of Pittman and enjoy music from Married Band O2 at 2 p.m. and and Back in the Day at 4 p.m.

The event is free and donations are welcome. A full bar and food will be available for purchase, money benefitting Pittman’s family.

Nashville Farmers Market set to start

The Nashville Farmer’s Market will kick off the 2022 season on May 1 and continue through Oct. 30.

The market runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East. Parking is free. The market is the place to shop local and support local growers, bakers and makers.

Each week market vendors offer an ever changing selection of locally grown plants from local gardens, seasonal produce, breads and baked goods, pastured meats and eggs, arts and more. Live music will be performed by talented Hoosier artists.

SNAP shoppers can have their benefits doubled at the market information tent. All shoppers can enter to win the market’s weekly $10 raffle. The market is a rain or shine event.

Primary Election Return Party set for next week

The Brown County Republican Party will host a Primary Election Return Party at the Season’s Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East, on May 3 at 6:15 p.m.
A pasta and salad bar, desserts and drinks will be provided. Admission is $10 per person. All Republican Poll Workers who show credentials will receive a free dinner. The dinner is a thank you to all Republican Poll Workers.

Spring Blossom Parade returns

Next month the annual Spring Blossom Parade returns to downtown Nashville.

Another tradition is also returning as the Rotary Club of Brown County will host children’s games following the parade on Saturday, May 7. The activities will take place at the Village Green near the corner of Main and Jefferson streets beginning at 12:30 p.m. and going until 2 p.m.

Games will begin for kids 15 and under immediately after the parade.

At 12:30 p.m., kids can enter a corn hole toss. At 12:50 p.m., a balloon toss will take place followed by an egg toss. Events will end with a pie-eating contest at 1:30 p.m. All games will be by age groups. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded to all participants with cash prizes for the pie eating contest. Participation is free.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and will go throughout downtown Nashville.

The Spring Blossom Parade has been a favorite outdoor celebration for decades, but was put on a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. The Brown County Lions Club has organized the parade since the 1980s.

Bear Creek Cemetery cleanup planned

MORGANTOWN — Bear Creek Cemetery, 6758 Bear Creek Road, will have its spring cleanup on Saturday, May 7, weather permitting. The makeup day will be the following Saturday, May 14.

High school band seeking information

The Brown County High School Band is seeking information from the community as they prepare for their spring concert in May.

The band will honor those in the community whose lives were lost to COVID-19 with a dedicated song and a picture slideshow during the spring concert on May 12. The concert will take place in the auditorium at the high school.

Antique tractor, truck show next month

The Brown County Historical Society, 90 E. Gould St., will host the first annual Hambone Antique Tractor and Truck Show on May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Village.

Participants should arrive and line up between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Judging will occur at 11:30 a.m., with awards at 1 p.m.

A lunch will be provided by the Pioneer Women and the Historical Society. Raffle tickets for the 2022 quilt will also be available for purchase.

Multiple local Bible studies scheduled

Over the next few months, multiple Bible studies will be available to residents.

All ladies are invited to join a Bible study of the “Invincible” DVD series by Robert Jeffress, which will happen every Tuesday through May 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rising Hope Baptist Church, 1267 Old State Road 46. Personal study guides and Bibles will be provided. Those interested should call 812-720-1570 and leave a message.

All people are invited to visit and learn more about Community Bible Study, a caring, in-depth, interdenominational study. The Nashville Remote Core Group is a part of the Bloomington Coed Class. The Nashville group meets Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Chapel at The Cornerstone Inn, 54 E. Franklin St. The current study will end April 19 and then resume again in mid-September. Youth Arts Contest slated this month

Peaceful Valley Heritage, Inc. is sponsoring the second annual Brown County Youth Arts Contest. The contest is for children in kindergarten to 12th grade.

An exhibit of works will be on display at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. on April 28 and 29 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and April 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Be a foster grandparent

Thrive Alliance and AmeriCorps Seniors are currently looking for Foster Grandparents for children.

Thrive Alliance and AmeriCorps Seniors work with public and faith-based schools, Head Start Centers and youth serving facilities in five counties, being role models, mentors, tutors and friends.

Project Lifesaver applications open

TRIAD and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department have announced that applications are now open for Project Lifesaver.

Those with loved ones at risk of wandering would obtain a personalized wrist-watch sized radio transmitter fitted to their wrist that would be used to locate them if they go missing.

This program is available to any Brown County resident due to a grant support from the Brown County Community Foundation and its partners.
