Police: Bicyclist airlifted from scene of crash on Old State Road 46

A bicyclist was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Indianapolis following a crash involving a truck on Old State Road 46 this weekend.

Lt. Mike Horn with the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department responded on July 9 after dispatch advised of a crash involving a truck and bicyclist on the hill near the Hard Truth Hills entrance and intersection of Snyder Road.

Upon his arrival, Horn made contact with the driver of the truck — later identified as 51-year-old Stephen Drake, of Camby — and other witnesses at the scene.

Witnesses said that Drake’s truck was stopped at the Hard Truth Hills exit attempting to go across Old 46 onto Snyder Road. Another vehicle was stopped in the northbound lane of Snyder Road waiting to turn left onto Old 46, but had waved Drake on, according to witness statements.

Drake told police he looked both ways before he crossed and did not see any oncoming traffic before proceeding. Drake’s truck then collided with a bicyclist coming down the hill, later identified as 53-year-old Joyce Jewell from Bloomington, who had the right-of-way.

According to Horn’s accident report, Jewell told police she did not remember what happened. She reportedly had chest pains following the crash.

She was alert, but was flown out by a helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.

No other injuries were reported.

This story was edited to reflect the bicyclist had the right-of-way at the time of the crash.
