Florida man injured in motorcycle crash

HAMBLEN TWP. — A single-vehicle crash led to injuries for a Florida man while riding his motorcycle last week.

Sgt. Chad Williams with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department responded to a crash on Spearsville Road on July 25 involving a motorcycle driven by Kirt Bowden, 68, from Fort Myers.

Bowden told police he was traveling south on Spearsville Road when something caught his attention to his left and he ran off the right side of the road, into the grass and ditch, an accident report states.

He told Williams that he lost control of the motorcycle and it slid out from under him back onto the pavement.

The motorcycle was towed from the scene. Bowden was transported to the hospital by EMS for a possible collar bone injury.

Felony, misdemeanor OWI charges filed

BELMONT — A man from Richmond has been charged with a felony and multiple misdemeanors for operating a vehicle while intoxicated following an accident in Belmont earlier this spring.

Around 10:30 p.m. on April 17 Brown County Sheriff’s deputies Jacob Gibson and Josh Stargell responded to the 3200 block of T.C. Steele Road for a crash involving two vehicles.

While on the way to the scene dispatch advised the caller — and driver of one of the vehicles — believed the other driver may be intoxicated, a probable cause affidavit states.

Upon arrival officers made contact with the first driver, who said she was traveling in the southbound lane up the hill when the other vehicle — driven by Robert Bailey, 52, Richmond — crossed the center line and sideswiped her vehicle.

She said she had a sore shoulder, but did not need transported to the hospital by EMS.

While speaking with Bailey, Gibson asked if he had been drinking. He denied drinking any alcohol. He said the road was narrow and that was the reason for the collision.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Gibson observed markings on the road that showed where Bailey came around the curve and went approximately 3 feet into the oncoming traffic.

Gibson asked Bailey again if he had been drinking, to which he said his passenger had. Gibson observed a bottle of wine in the vehicle and reported smelling alcohol, but that he was not sure if it was from Bailey or the vehicle.

There were two minors in Bailey’s vehicle, according to the affidavit.

He later told police he had been drinking several hours prior when he had five to six glasses of wine.

Bailey did not consent to a breath test. He was administered other field sobriety tests, which yielded clues to intoxication, according to the affidavit.

Bailey was transported to the Brown County Law Enforcement Center for a certified test which showed “mouth alcohol,” according to the affidavit.

He was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw. Results of that test eventually showed his blood-alcohol content was 0.18, more than twice the legal limit.

Bailey was formally charged on July 20 with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person with a passenger less than 18 years of age, Level 6 felony. He was also charged with three OWI misdemeanors.
