A Taste of Art returns next month

The seventh annual A Taste of Art will take place on Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. at the Seasons Lodge Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East.

Tastings and a silent action will begin at 5 p.m., with a live art auction at 7 p.m.

Tastings will include the finest Brown County wines, beers, and distilled liquors, as well as hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.

A Taste of Art is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Brown County. All proceeds fund youth development and community projects.

More acts announced for music center

The Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Blvd., continues to announce new shows for 2022 including Jeff Beck, Lindsey Buckingham, Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis.

Buckingham will perform on Nov. 3. Buckingham has released seven studio and three live albums as a solo artist. He was previously the producer for Fleetwood Mac.

Guitarist Jeff Beck will take center stage on Oct. 19. Beck is considered one of the most talented guitarists in the world and has earned eight Grammy awards, according to a music center press release.

Country music band Sawyer Brown will perform on Oct. 8. The band auditioned for the TV show “Star Search” in 1983 and won the $100,000 grand prize that came with a record contract. Their hits include “Step That Step,” “Some Girls Do” and “Thank God for You.”

County artists Morgan and Tillis will perform on Oct. 7 as part of their Glitz and Glamour Tour. Combined, they have recorded 28 top 10 hits and have sold more than 18 million records.

Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will perform on Aug. 26. Skaggs has been inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame, the National Fiddler Hall of Fame, the IBMA Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Easton Corbin will perform on Sept. 16. Corbin has amassed seven top 10 singles and three American Country Awards. He was also named Billboard’s 2010 Top New Country Artist.

Tracy Byrd will perform on Sept. 22. Byrd became a household name in 1993 when his single, “Holdin’ Heaven,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Charts.

Air Supply will perform on Sept. 30. In 2013, Air Supply was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Hall of Fame. The duo celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2015 and continue to perform for audiences all over the world.

“Menopause the Musical” will take center stage on Oct. 1. The musical is now in its 20th year and 16th as the longest-running musical in Las Vegas history.

Lee Greenwood will perform on Oct. 20.

Greenwood is most known for his signature song “God Bless the U.S.A.,” which was originally released and successful in 1984. Greenwood has earned multiple Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music awards, a Grammy award for Top Male Vocal Performance and many others.

Joe Satriani will perform on Oct. 23. The guitarist has released 19 studio albums and is the founder of the all-star “G3” extravaganza. Satriani released his new album, “The Elephants of Mars” on April 8.

Rick Springfield will perform on Nov. 9. The Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter and musician has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody” and “Human Touch.”

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will perform their Wild & Swingin’ Holiday Party on Dec. 7. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is an American swing and jazz band known for their arrangements of classic holiday songs.

Hoosier Artist Gallery featured artists

Clay artist Della Wood and woodworker Don Wood are the featured artists at the Hoosier Artist Gallery’s for the month of August.

Della makes functional clay pieces and sculptures. Don creates tables, wooden pieces and custom built rocking chairs.

The gallery will be open for the Fourth Friday Art Walk on Aug. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitors can enter a drawing for an Art Lovers Giveaway. Artist Beth Parrock will give a demonstration of her jewelry making methods. Della will present a winner with a handcrafted vase and Don will give away a natural wood wine bottle holder.

The gallery, located at 45 S. Jefferson St., is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Exhibitions, sales at art gallery

The Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, will present an exhibition of work by late Indiana artist Nancy Noel.

Noel’s paintings feature children and animals hang in the homes of Oprah Winfrey, Robert Redford, museums, embassies and other institutions. She remains one of the best-selling artists of all time.

Twenty original works will be on display and for sale, as well as a large selection of reproductions.

This is the first major gallery exhibit since her death in 2020. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Gallery Foundation.

The Rapp Room is also currently filled with new works for the summer.

The 2022 gallery event calendar is as follows:

Aug. 27 to Sept. 25: Nancy Noel exhibition and sale

Oct. 1 to Nov. 13: Collector’s Showcase “Snowfall” with a reception on Oct. 1.

The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Parking and admission are free.

New exhibit at Ascension Fine Arts

Ascension Fine Arts, 61 W. Main St., is hosting a showcase of work by photographer Kristen Warning titled “Embracing Movements of Nature.” The exhibit will be on display from Aug. 23 to Sept. 18, with an artist’s reception on Aug. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Warning’s photography focuses on interactions and movement in landscapes and nature. She has work juried into galleries across southern Indiana and Kentucky.

Coming soon to the Playhouse

The Brown County Playhouse is once again showing movies and tickets are $7.

“Jurassic World: Dominion” will be shown on Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. and Sept. 3 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Also in September, Little Sisters of Hoboken will return to the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., in “Nunsense II: The Second Coming.” The play will run from Sept. 9 to 18 with shows starting at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

After the success of their first benefit performance sisters Robert Anne, Leo and Mary Paul — more commonly known as “Sister Amnesia” — along with the long-suffering Rev. Mother decided to put together another musical revue to thank everyone who supported them. But the plot changes quickly as the sisters learn there is a talent scout in the audience. The audience is invited to watch the sisters sing, dance, roller skate, play bingo and brawl with a rival order in the heartwarming sequel.

The Playhouse will also offer free entertainment in conjunction with the Fourth Friday Art Walk each month through October. Entertainment will start at 6:30 p.m. featuring bands of different genres. Bar and concessions will be open and the Artist Associates of Brown County art gallery will be the highlight.

On Sept. 24 the bluegrass band the Henhouse Prowlers will perform beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35.

Musicians Eric Brown and Jenn Cristy will perform their acoustic show “Jenn and Eric: Simply Acoustic. Simply Amazing” beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. Tickets are $20.

On Sept. 30 “Made in the USA: Rock ‘n’ Roll American Made” featuring America’s rock music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for that show are $30.

Upcoming art guild events, exhibits

The Brown County Art Guild will host “Opening the Path to Creativity” retreat on Sept. 9. The location is off-site on a property south of Nashville.

Guild artist member and mixed media artist Dixie Ferrer and certified Rolfer, somatic movement educator and psychological astrologer Allison Distler will lead the retreat. Activities will include gentle yoga, meditation, journaling and collage.

The workshop is open to all skill levels.

The guild is currently showcasing “Fields of Green,” a historic collection exhibit and “Down on the Farm,” a special exhibition and sale.

Multiple artists will also hold free painting demonstrations at the guild throughout the month of August:

Aug. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m.: oil artist Karen Graeser

This fall the guild will partner with the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Center for Rural Engagement to host a series of complimentary monthly concerts featuring solo and duo performances.

Each concert will have a different theme. The concerts are free with no reservation required. All are welcome.

Tickets are currently on sale for the guild’s annual raffle, which will be held on Nov. 19. The winner of the raffle will receive the oil painting, “On a Clear Day” by Ronald P. Mack. Tickets are one for $30, two for $50 or five for $100 and can be purchased at the guild.

The Brown County Art Guild is located at 48 S. Van Buren St. and is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Festival season happening at Bill Monroe park

Festival season is in full swing at Bill Monroe’s Music Park and Campground this year.

The Southern Indiana Blues Festival is planned for Aug. 25 to 27 and will include a golf cart parade, decorating contest and a barbecue cook off. O2R, Popa Chubby, Homemade Jam and more will perform. Admission starts at $55.

Uncle Pen Fest is scheduled for Sept. 21 to 24 and will include four different styles of bluegrass music and workshops. Bands such as Junior Sisk Band, Sideline and The Dillards will perform. Admission starts at $45.

Onsite camping is available for all festivals. Reservations are required for camping and are currently open. Every person entering the campground and festival is required to purchase an admission ticket. Children 12 and under are free.

Monthly acrylic art class

Brown County artist Anabel Hopkins has resumed monthly fluid pouring painting classes at Country Heritage Winery, 225 S. Van Buren St. The class will run from 1 to 3 p.m. upstairs in the downtown Nashville winery.

Suitable for young learners and beginners, each participant will create a painting on canvas and a ceramic tile. All materials are provided. The cost is $42 and the fee is payable in advance by contacting Anabel at 812-340-8781.

Acrylic pouring is a brushless form of painting by creating layers of different colored paint which is poured and manipulated on a surface, making colorful marbled-type designs.

A class will be held monthly on the first Saturday of each month through September.

Applications open for holiday craft show

Applications for the Seasons Holiday Art and Craft Show 2022 are now being accepted.

The show dates are Friday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seasons Lodge Event Center, 560 State Road 46 East. The show has been a Thanksgiving weekend tradition for nearly 40 years.

Artists and crafters are invited to apply to the juried show through the show’s website, seasonsartandcraftshow.com. Applications are also available in the Seasons Lodge business office.
