Drivers injured in 3-vehicle crash

BEAN BLOSSOM  Two vehicles were towed from the scene of a crash in Bean Blossom last month.

On Monday, Aug. 22, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool responded to a crash at Old Settlers Road and State Road 135 North.

One driver, later identified as Cindy Thompson, 63, Martinsville, reported that she was coming down the hill when she saw a red truck approaching on her side of the road.

The truck then struck her vehicle. The second driver, later identified as 57-year-old John Collins from Nashville, reported that he did not know what happened.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Driver injured after car flips upside down 

VAN BUREN TWP.  Officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the southern part of Brown County last month after a report of an inverted vehicle.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool responded to the crash on Brand Hollow Road on Saturday, Aug. 27 and found EMS and fire departments on scene.

He made contact with the driver, Alyssa Harden, 29, of Columbus, who told Pool was “going a little fast” when she approached another car, according to the accident report.

Tire marks at the scene indicated that her vehicle hit an embankment of the west side of the road and flipped, the report states.

Driver and dog injured from limb falling on vehicle

A 47-year-old man from Nashville and his dog were injured after a tree limb fell onto the moving vehicle earlier this month.

The driver, Jason Bartley, made contact with officers who were in the parking lot of the Brown County Law Enforcement Center on Sept. 4 after the incident occurred.

Police saw Bartley pull into the parking lot in a pickup truck with a smashed windshield, according to the accident report.

Bartley spoke with officers and told them that he was traveling east on State Road 46 West near Town Hill Road when a large limb fell onto his truck, breaking the windshield and striking him and his dog.

Bartley had small abrasions to his right hand and forearm, as well as his right lower leg. His dog was bleeding from the head and visibly disoriented, the report states.

According to the report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Bales, the truck had external damage to the passenger door, roof and camper shell and internal damage to the seats.

A large limb was clearly visible in the passenger side of the vehicle, as well as broken glass.

Bartley told police he did not need medical attention but wanted to see to the well-being of his dog.

Officers investigated the site of the crash and found a broken limb on the side of the road and broken glass on the ground.

Woman faces pair of drug-related felonies

Kendra Sanders, 22, of Nineveh, was charged on May 9 after police were notified that Sanders had left a purse containing drugs and paraphernalia in a truck.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Bowling made contact with the complainant, who said they found loaded syringes, marijuana and smoking pipes in a purse belonging to Sanders.

It was determined the syringes contained heroin.

Sanders was charged with the following: Possession of a narcotic drug, Level 6 felony; unlawful possession of a syringe, Level 6 felony; possession of a controlled substance, Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, Class B misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, Class C misdemeanor.

Traffic stop leads to arrest on drug charges

Indiana State Trooper Matthew Hatchett arrested 28-year-old Madison Steele, from Bloomington, on drug charges after a traffic stop on July 20.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hatchett observed Steele traveling at a high rate of speed and using her cell phone on State Road 46 East as he was sitting stationary at the Brown County Law Enforcement Center.

After he activated his emergency lights, he saw Steele place a backpack into the back seat of the vehicle.

During the traffic stop he asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle and she said no. She did not answer when he asked if there were drugs in the vehicle.

Hatchett asked Steele why she moved the backpack to the back seat and she said she did not think she had any weapons.

Hatchett asked if he could conduct a search of the backpack and Steele refused. He asked Steele to exit the vehicle so K-9 Axe could do a free-air sniff.

Axe’s behavior at the vehicle indicated the presence of drugs, according to the affidavit.

Inside the backpack Steele had moved, Hatchett found a jar with marijuana, paraphernalia and a bag containing a clear capsule with methamphetamine.

Steele told police she was given the pill at a festival and did not know what it was.

Steele was transported to the Brown County Jail and charged with a Level 6 felony for possession of methamphetamine, Class B misdemeanor for possession of marijuana and Class C misdemeanor for possession of paraphernalia.

South Carolina man, 53, charged with animal cruelty

Kenny Biddle, a 53-year-old man from South Carolina, was charged with a Class A misdemeanor for cruelty to an animal after reportedly leaving a dog in a locked vehicle earlier this summer.

Nashville Lt. Mike Horn was dispatched on July 23 to the parking lot at the Brown County Courthouse for report of a dog locked in a vehicle.

At the scene he made contact with Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Billy Bryant, who happened to be at the courthouse when he was flagged down by visitors in the parking lot.

According to the probable cause affidavit, at 4 p.m. they told Bryant that they heard the dog barking and found it in a vehicle with the windows rolled up and no access to water.

At 4:30 p.m. the temperature was 90 degrees, according to the affidavit.

Officers tried to gain access to the vehicle but could not. At 5:05 p.m. Biddle, the owner, arrived and reportedly told police there was water in the vehicle.

Officers asked Biddle if the dog could access the water. He said no, and that he did not realize he was gone as long as he had been.

Biddle was formally charged on Aug. 9.
