The guest speaker will be Najia Sherzad Hoshmand, who will discuss leaving Afghanistan in August 2021 with her family as well as her work assisting refugees at the Afghan Refugee Resettlement program at Camp Atterbury.

Najia was born in Kabul and fled Afghanistan with her family in August 2021. She now lives in Indianapolis with her husband, their three children, and extended family and works in the Marion County Treasurer’s Office as a financial manager. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Indira Gandhi University in Delhi and is completing an MBA at Kelley School of Business IUPUI that she began at Dunya University in Kabul.

She has held positions in risk management, compliance, administration, human resources, treasury, finance, and logistics for the Danish Refugee Council, the United Nations International Organization for Migration, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit or German Corporation for Technical Cooperation (GIZ), and several Afghani commercial banks. Najia was the deputy chief executive officer for Pashtany Bank, the national bank of Afghanistan owned by the state. In addition to English, she speaks Dari, Pashto, Urdu, and Hindi.

Najia helped with the processing of Afghan refugees at Camp Atterbury and continues to volunteer in her community to assist refuges with interpretation and translation and access to benefits.
