LETTERS: ‘No cannons designed by women’; Vote ‘Yes’ on Election Day; ‘Say no to tax increases for education’

‘No cannons designed by women’

To the editor:

Around the world in the history of our species, show me one single cannon designed by and built by women to kill other women — just one.

’Vote Yes on Nov. 8’

To the editor

I support the BCS referendum. The Indiana legislature has enacted tax policies that require many school corporations to periodically request a referendum to maintain staffing levels.

The fact that Brown County Schools have requested this referendum is NOT due to any corporation fiscal mismanagement. It is the inevitable result of state tax policies. A system is perfectly designed to deliver the results that it delivers, and, in this case, legislators designed a system that requires periodic referendums. We all know that student enrollment is declining. This is partially due to school choice policies enacted by the state.

But teachers are leaving, also. They can usually get more money, sometimes a lot more money, by migrating to a neighboring school corporation. Passing the referendum allows the corporation to increase the likelihood of retaining its best teachers which also supports student retention. Vote Yes on Nov. 8.

‘Say no to tax increases for education’

To the editor:

For 50 years (folks I didn’t say 15) — for 50 years the National Education Association has been in charge of the education of America’s youth. In that period of time we (America) have gone from No. 24 in science and No. 38 in math.

More money is demanded every year while standards have declined. We spend $13,187 per pupil per year in this country. Washington D.C., $18,000!

It was 2014 when a high school graduate was no longer smarter than his parents — who were high school graduates. It is the truth. It is a fact. More money means a dumber student and boy do I hate it.

If a foreign power had done this it would be declared an act of war. Remove the wisdom of Jesus Christ. Remove the demand for excellence in our instructors and our kids. Remove the demand for discipline and good behavior, what do you get? No. 24 and No. 38.

Chinese fifth graders are learning variable calculus. Why should we pay taxes twice? More administrators, more janitorial staff, more counselors, more buildings, more land, more taxes and insurance.

One of the most important and probably the most practical classes: building trades — canceled. A class that helps those young men who aren’t going to college to be solvent and a credit to the community.

We can’t educate the kids we have but we are considering 2, 3, 4 and 5 year old kids. Oh, guess what: high school students will be offered the chance to take classes in child rearing and family care, maybe to help out. Whatever happened to parents raising their kids?

You want smarter kids, lose the N.E.A. You want healthier more productive kids, lose the teachers union. Yes, I promise, they will ask again in four years, “We need more money.” I just say “No” to the incessant tax increases.
