Lilly Scholar finalists announced, recipient to be named in December

The Brown County Community Foundation has announced that five high school seniors have been selected as finalists for the 2023 Brown County Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program.

The finalists are Chase Austin, Joey Denison, Hadley Gradolf, Londyn Koester and Elizabeth Roush.

The finalists were selected from among 16 applications submitted by students that live in Brown County and attend an accredited public high school.

Applications for the 2023 scholarship were blindly reviewed and independently scored by members of a scholarship committee.

Finalists completed an impromptu essay and interview in October, which were scored and a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar was selected.

The finalists’ rankings, along with the committee’s recommendations for scholarship nominees, have been submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. for final review of scholarship recipients for Brown County.

The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Brown County will be named in December 2022.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are awarded four-year, full-tuition scholarships to pursue baccalaureate degrees at colleges or universities in Indiana. The scholarship also includes up to $900 annually for required textbooks and equipment.

Since the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program’s inception, more than $439 million in scholarship tuition has been provided.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is administered by Independent Colleges of Indiana and community foundations in each of Indiana’s 92 counties.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company.

Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location.

In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. The endowment funds significant programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion. However, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana.
