Local fire departments and Indiana Department of Natural Resources joined forces to fight a woods fire in Brown County State Park over the weekend.

On Nov. 20 a woods fire started in the eastern part of the state park and as of Nov. 21, a cause was still unknown and DNR personnel were still working to control the damage.

Nashville, Southern Brown, Hamblen Township and Harrison Township fire departments, along with DNR personnel responded to the park at around 3 p.m. and fought the flames, which spread in all directions, for several hours.

Marty Benson, DNR Public Information Officer, said the total extent of the fire is estimated to be 100 acres. No injuries were sustained and no structures were involved.

Just before the woods fire, multiple fire agencies responded to a structure fire on State Road 46 West.

Nashville, Fruitdale, Hamblen Township and Jackson Township fire departments responded to the structure fire at approximately 7:30 a.m.

According to Brown County (Nashville) Fire Chief Nick Kelp, the fire started from a fire in the fireplace and spread into the attic.

The total area of the structure damage due to the fire included the wall by the fireplace and roughly one third of the attic, along with water damage, according to Kelp.

Kelp also said the contents in the back of the house survived the fire.

“I wouldn’t call it a total loss, but the building may be easier to tear down and rebuild than repair,” Kelp said about the damage to the home.

Two firefighters were treated and released on scene by EMS. Red Cross assisted the occupants with a place to stay temporarily.
