BLOTTER: Condemned property burns on Possum Trot; crash at Todd’s Trace

Condemned property burns on Possum Trot Road

JACKSON TWP. — An unoccupied building on Possum Trot Road caught fire and burned steadily for around three hours before it was called in on the early morning of Jan. 2.

According to Jackson Volunteer Fire Department Chief Glenn Elmore, the fire burned for so long without being spotted most likely because of foggy conditions.

Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department, Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department, IU Health LifeLine, Brown County and Nashville law enforcement agencies responded.

Elmore said last week that firefighters extinguished the fire in the 6000 block and looked for hot spots in the wood of the structure. After putting the majority of them out, they left and returned around two hours later, when it was lighter and they could better see the scene.

Elmore said the residence on the property had been condemned, but power was still on.

The building that caught fire, which was once served as a barn or shed, still had electricity running through it, and unless something changes, Elmore said the fire was more than likely caused by an electric failure.

Elmore reported that no injuries were sustained in the fire and the process of putting it out went smoothly.

“It was the first structure fire of the year, and hopefully the last structure fire of the year,” Elmore said last week.

Driver loses control, flips car in ditch

According to a crash report, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Duke responded to a crash on State Road 46 West at the intersection of Todd’s Trace on Dec. 22. At the time of the crash, the road surface was wet from rain.

Only one car was involved in the accident. The driver, 29-year-old Caylor Easterday, said he lost control while heading westbound on 46 West, causing the vehicle to go into the ditch.

The car flipped onto its roof and came to rest facing the opposite direction from where he was heading. According to the report, Easterday blamed the crash on a “faulty control” in the car that he had known about.

Easterday complained of back pain but did not go to a hospital. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
