NEW ON THE FORCE: Officer Q&A with Young

Editor’s note: We have been introducing new officers who have been sworn into the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. Nashville Metropolitan Police Department also hired a new officer that took oath earlier this month.

Heath Young

Age? I am 36 years old.

Are you married? Do you have any kids? I am married, I married my high school sweetheart Morgan Young 16 years ago. We have two children, our daughter Addison who is 14 and our son Ryker who is 9.

Where did you grow up and/or where do you consider yourself to be from? I was born and raised in Nashville. But I have lived in many states since high school.

What is your education? I graduated from Brown County High School. After high school I joined the U.S. Army and have an associates degree in gunsmithing.

What is your law enforcement experience? This is my first full-time position in law enforcement but I was a reserve with Nashville for a few months before being hired.

What did you do before this? I spent 10 years in the Army with one deployment to Afghanistan. I was a tank turret mechanic and gunsmith for most of my career.

Why did you choose law enforcement? I went through the C4 Program for law enforcement in 2004 and 2005. I always knew it was something that I wanted to do. After high school the war on terrorism was at its height and I wanted to help anyway that I could so I put law enforcement on hold for a while.

What’s the best part about being a police officer? The best thing for sure is helping people. There is always a sense of gratitude when you can see the smile on someone’s face who needed help. I love interacting with the public and getting to know everyone.

What’s one of the most difficult parts of the job? One thing that I have found difficult is adjusting from military lingo to law enforcement lingo. I never realized how different the radio communications were.

What are you looking forward to in your new role? I look forward to meeting and helping all the citizens of Nashville and Brown County. I am happy to be back home and serve the community that my children are growing up in.
