The guest speaker will be Cullen McCarty, executive vice president and fifth-generation owner of Smithville Communications.

He will speak on one hundred years of connecting rural and small-town Indiana.

Nationally recognized for more than a decade as a Top 100 Broadband Company, privately-owned Smithville is Indiana’s largest independent telecom company. Smithville has been committed to delivering fast and reliable connectivity and legendary service to its customers for over a century.

In addition to its residential services, Smithville provides commercial fiber-based connectivity for businesses, university campuses, biotechnology companies, healthcare providers, government offices, residential centers, communities, and other entities, including the WestGate@Crane Technology Park and the Purdue Research Park

McCarty currently serves on the Government Affairs Committee of the Indiana Broadband and Technology Association. On a local level, he is a member of the Monroe County Redevelopment Commission; the Greene County Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors; and is helping shepherd strategic relationships with Smithville’s local Rural Electric Membership Cooperatives. In March of 2020, Smithville and SCI REMC partnered to provide 3,400 residents and businesses around Ellettsville, Lake Monroe and Gosport with broadband internet access by June of this year.

A recognized industry veteran, McCarty has been an advocate for insuring competitive and robust broadband, particularly for rural areas of the United States for over twenty years. He regularly works with members of Congress and staffers to promote positive policy development.

A lifelong Hoosier, McCarty has a bachelor of arts degree from Indiana University and resides in rural Monroe County with his wife Rachel and their two children.
