BC Habitat for Humanity invites public to attend annual report to the community

Habitat for Humanity volunteers work away on building a ramp.

Brown County Indiana Habitat for Humanity invites the community to celebrate with them at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 13 in the Brown County Inn tent. The nonprofit organization has been extremely busy this past year and will showcase their accomplishments during the event, plus recognize its many donors, sponsors and volunteers who contributed. In addition, its famous annual Pie Auction will be held to allow bidders to buy a delicious pie from one of the many, stupendous bakers in Brown County. All proceeds will benefit BC Indiana Habitat for Humanity. The Brown County Inn is graciously providing desserts and refreshments for guests.

The Indiana Uplands Regional Housing Study of September 2019 estimates that by 2030 Brown County will need 145 owner-occupied homes and 148 rental units. “Housing first” has been proven to stabilize communities by supporting low-income families. When people live in decent, affordable homes, homeowners and their families frequently improve their health, educational attainment, safety and ultimately generational wealth.

Brown County Indiana Habitat for Humanity offers hope and stability, in partnership with Brown County families and the community, by creating safe and affordable homes within the vision of Habitat for Humanity International: “A world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

The Brown County affiliate of Habitat International was incorporated in 1990, with the first home constructed for a family of four on Salt Creek Road in 1989. Since that beginning, homes have been built in three different townships of the county. Twenty-one families have become homeowners and gained a new lease on a hopeful future. The 21st house was completed in 2020, despite COVID. In addition, beginning in the early ‘90s, Brown County Habitat has done many home repairs, one addition, and several ramps through the “Brush with Kindness” program. BCIHFH is currently finishing up the building of its 22nd home with plans to begin construction on the 23rd home in the Fall, depending on various factors such as the weather, supply availability, volunteer capacity and funding.
