The Indiana School Boards Association recognized the School Board of Trustees for Brown County Schools with a “Commendable” rating for 2022.

ISBA’s Exemplary Governance Awards (EGA) annually honor an entire school board that engages in professional learning and development in its role as leaders of public education.

In 2022, Brown County Schools was one of only 106 school boards out of 291 which received recognition through the EGA program. A Commendable rating for an entire board is demonstrated by an outstanding commitment to student success and good governance in which a majority of Board members have achieved a Commendable or higher status individually.

“I’m excited that our board’s work is recognized as being in the top third of school boards by our state organization,” said Amy Huffman Oliver, President of Brown County Schools Board of Trustees. “ISBA puts on terrific conferences for board members that ensure we provide the best services to Brown County Schools that we can.”

Individual Awards

In addition to board-level awards, 197 school board members across the state received individual achievement awards. ISBA recognized four Brown County School Board members for engaging in professional development to serve the public in their important role throughout their tenure in office:

Carol Bowden – Level 4 Exemplary

Stephanie Kritzer – Level 4 Exemplary

Amy Huffman Oliver – Level 2 Advanced

Vicki Harden – Level 1 Commendable

“Each of us takes time out of our full-time jobs and personal commitments to go to “School Board School” several days and evenings per year,” according to Oliver. “ISBA professional development have helped me enormously over the past two-and-a half years as a board member to understand education law and finances and they are available to consult with us when we have questions.”

“School boards perform a vital public service by acting on behalf of the state and the community as the local policy-making body for their schools,” said ISBA Executive Director Terry Spradlin. “It is important for school board members to actively participate in continuing education in order to perform their duties effectively.”
