Larry Gene Mercer, age 83 passed away peacefully on Monday morning, October 9, 2023 at his home in Brown County.

Larry was born on May 2, 1940 at home in Monroe County, and attended Nashville High School.

He proudly served his country as a Fireman Apprentice with the United States Navy and later continued to serve his country as a Staff Sergeant with the Indiana National Guard from 1980 – 2000. Larry married Wanda Belle Mack on January 21, 1960 in Morgantown and spent 56 devoted years together until her passing in 2016.

Larry retired after 31 years of service as a Machinist for Cummins. He was a member of the American Legion Post 24 in Columbus and the Columbus Moose Lodge No 398. Larry enjoyed spending time in the outdoors by fishing, hunting and drinking beer. Most of all, he enjoyed taking care of his beagle, Rascal and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Larry will be missed by his daughters, Trina Watkins of Greenwood and Valerie (Mike) Dunn of Brown County; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; daughter in law Laura Mercer and his dog Rascal.

He was preceded in death by his mother Fonetta B. (Grubb) Mercer; infant daughter; wife Wanda; cousin, Nelson Elkins; granddaughter, Nicki Mercer and son, Buddy Mercer.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11th at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation &Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville with military honors presented by the Brown County Honor Guard and the United States Navy.
