Superintendent urges yes vote on referendum

To the Editor:

I am writing to express the urgency of the upcoming referendum to keep our incredible educators and staff members of Brown County Schools. This pivotal decision not only impacts the immediate future of our children’s education but also the very essence of our community’s identity and well-being.

As a steadfast supporter of the upcoming referendum to secure funding for Brown County Schools, I am compelled to outline the critical implications of this vote. Our schools are not just educational institutions; they are the bedrock of our community’s future and identity. The referendum presents us with a pivotal choice: to preserve the high-quality education and community spirit that define us or face the dire consequences of inaction.

Our high-quality teachers and staff members are the cornerstone of the educational excellence that Brown County Schools are known for. These dedicated professionals go above and beyond to nurture and inspire our students, preparing them for successful futures. A failure to pass the referendum would not only undermine their hard work but could lead to a significant reduction in staff. Our staff is grossly underpaid compared to our neighboring schools. We are losing the best of the best, year after year, because they are offered thousands of dollars more to go somewhere else. Such a scenario jeopardizes the future of our schools and, by extension, the future of Brown County itself.

The identity of our community is intricately linked to the success and vibrancy of our schools. A failed referendum risks forcing us into a position where we may have to consider consolidation with other districts in the future. This could lead to higher costs and a loss of our unique community identity, diluting the rich traditions and values that make Brown County special. Voting against the referendum will have immediate and tangible negative impacts on our students’ education. It would necessitate increases in class sizes, elimination of teaching positions, and significant alterations to our academic and student support programs. Our recent survey, which was mailed to every household in Brown County, highlighted the tough decisions we face. These include potentially drastic reductions to valuable programs that offer career education, summer internships, and a range of other educational options vital for student development.

Furthermore, our Career Resource Center and comprehensive K-12 programs are at risk of substantial cuts. These resources are instrumental in preparing our students for the workforce and higher education, offering them opportunities to explore various career paths and gain practical experience. The athletics program, a source of pride and unity for our community, faces an uncertain future. This could diminish our students’ holistic educational experience and community engagement.

The stakes of this referendum cannot be overstated. A “NO” vote threatens to unravel the fabric of our educational system and, with it, the very essence of what makes Brown County a remarkable place to live and raise a family. I urge all residents to consider the long-term impact of their vote on the education of our children and the future of our community. Let us come together to support the referendum and ensure that Brown County Schools continue to be a beacon of excellence and community pride.
