NINEVEH, INDIANA

Janet Marie (Limbach) Smith passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 10:30 p.m. She was born in Columbus, Indiana on December 21, 1952. She was 71 years old.

She grew up in a boisterous family of six in Warren Township. She graduated from Warren Central High School where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, James Smith. They were married for more than 51 years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was a jill of all trades and master of many. She was a hairdresser, pottery painter, educational assistant, volunteer, and ultimately an elementary school teacher. She retired from Brown County Schools at Van Buren Elementary where she taught 3rd and 6th grades.

She loved living in Brown County and on Cordry Lake, even when she became allergic to most of the things that grow in it. One of her greatest prides was earning her undergraduate and master’s degrees as an adult student. A lifelong crafter, she dabbled expertly in sewing, candy-making, baking, stained glass, and more. She created hundreds of COVID masks during lockdown and thousands of greeting cards.

She leaves behind her husband, James; her children, Aaron (Mary) Smith and Amanda (Bill) Congrove and her grandson, Tucker; siblings, Mary Lou Feist and Greg Limbach and brother-in-law, Gary Matthews; brothers-in-law, Tom (Patty) Smith and Danny Smith. She is survived by nieces Stephanie Bailey, Angela Rosenau, Brandon Matthews and Andrew Matthews, Nathan Smith, Natalie Crosby, and all their families. She was recently preceded in death by her sister Camille Matthews.

No memorial service is planned at this time. If you would like to honor Janet’s memory, please contribute to the charity of your choice.
