Where’s There: A Very Special Guest

Hey Brown County! It’s your local voyager Dakota here! Now only if I could tell you where ‘here’ actually is.

I found this very impressive wooden carving while exploring the downtown of Nashville. If I didn’t know any better — and I very, VERY recently learned, I would think this was a relic left over by an ancient civilization to represent an important person of their time.

Relic or no, it does symbolize an important character to Brown County. Growing up, I remember hearing his name, visiting his lodge in the park and seeing drawings of him around town. So much so, that until recently I always believed he was a real man.

Kids, close your ears and look away because what I am about to say is harrowing. This man is a character who was published in comic strips by Cartoonist and Journalist Kin Hubbard between 1904 and 1937. The character gained such notoriety that during the comic’s 33 years of publication it was syndicated in more than 300 papers nationally.

They always say to never meet your heroes, maybe it’s because you’ll realize they were never real after all.

Fictional or real, this character has become a staple for Brown County and is in the hearts of Hoosiers throughout the entire state.

Before I have an existential crisis, Brown County do you think you know where I am? Send us an email at [email protected] or stop by our office with your guess in-person. One lucky person will be chosen at random to win their very own copy of 175 of Brown County.

Last week we did not receive a single correct guess. C’mon guys, I expected more out of you. I guess I finally stumped you, huh?

And as a friendly reminder to our past winners who have yet to pick up their book, you guys should come by to soon before I keep them all to regift this Christmas. (I’m just kidding … or am I?) And don’t forget, we want to take your lovely photo with me and your new book!

Nonetheless, feel free to stop by during regular business hours (M-F, 9-4) to pick up your copy and get a photo with me!
