County accepts contract for animal control

Many games await dogs that participate in the Dawg Gone Walk & FIesta.

The Brown County Animal Control Commission and Brown County Humane Society have accepted a $37,500 contract with the county to take care of stray or unclaimed animals.

Brown County Commissioner Diana Biddle said the contract is unchanged from the past several years.

The humane society will get an additional $12,000 to support the work of its Serving Pets Outreach Team, or SPOT, Biddle said. SPOT volunteers go to pet owners’ homes and help with needs such as food, fencing or bedding, and SPOT provides low-cost spay and neuter services and specials.

Brown County Council President David Critser said the groups also will get about $5,000 through the county’s dog tax.

The local humane society achieved a 97.5 percent “save” rate in 2016.

Its expenses can total $21,000 per month, so the society relies on donations and fundraisers to make up the difference in what it receives from local government.

Its annual Dawg Gone Walk and Fiesta is Sunday, May 21 at Deer Run Park and its Chocolate Walk is Saturday, Nov. 11 in downtown Nashville.
