5 things to know this week: Bridges, Section 8 housing, art weekend and more

1. State Road 135 in Bean Blossom reopened Sept. 1, and is stay open all the way to Morgantown for about two weeks. Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Harry Maginity said INDOT is moving equipment to the next worksite. Then, a bridge and a culvert will be replaced at two places close together, near 135 North and Farm Road, over Bear Creek in Morgan County. One of those projects will take 45 days, the other 30 to complete, INDOT reported. INDOT has been working on the two Bean Blossom-area bridges since the first week of April, forcing a detour onto Railroad Road.

2. Next spring, bridge or culvert work will be done at three places on State Road 46 in Brown County — but the road will not be completely closed at any of them, INDOT says. The work sites are at 46 West and Bond Cemetery Road (culvert replacement), 46 West and Treatment Plant Road (deck replacement on large bridge over Salt Creek) and 46 East near Brown Hill Road (pipe repair and pavement patching). INDOT says signals will be installed at either end of two 46 West work zones to allow one-lane traffic; the two-lane traffic will be allowed to flow at the 46 East site.

3. The wait list for Section 8 housing in Brown and Owen counties opens for one day only: Friday, Sept. 8. Section 8 is a federal program that helps subsidize rent for low-income people. Application requests will be taken by phone, and only the first 200 will be accepted. The number to call is 812-375-2216, between 1 and 4 p.m. Being placed on the waiting list does not guarantee that applicants will qualify for assistance. With questions, call 812-339-3447, ext. 701.

4. One of Brown County’s tenderloin sandwiches has made a state “best of” list. Out of the Ordinary Restaurant and Hickory Sports Bar’s out-of-the-bun-sized sandwich is in the running for the title of Best Tenderloin. But first, it has to beat out 31 other tenderloins from across the state. Voting is open until Friday, Oct. 27 at visitindiana.com/best-of-indiana/cast-your-vote/40-tenderloins.

5. If you’re a fan of art in any form, get out and about in Brown County this weekend. Art Colony Weekend includes seven events that allow visitors and locals to learn, create and observe, in downtown Nashville and at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.
