To the editor:
To paraphrase a song of Johnny Cash that says, “I keep my eyes wide open all the time” to keep the Republicans in line: There were no bills with any kind of tax cuts for the people of Indiana. There were no bills to give us more freedom. They were more interested in changing old laws like no liquor sales on Sunday, not because of compassion for alcoholics that couldn’t get a drink on Sunday but because of tax money and support from the liquor industry. Funny how money makes you change your mind.
Last year when gas was the cheapest in years, they added a 10-cent gas tax, and it has not been that low since. Last year they slipped in a law to take rifles away from deer hunters on public land. Now that we are all giddy about the Trump tax cuts, I am sure many in state and local governments see an opportunity to raise taxes since people have more money. They will find some way to raise, or invent the need to raise, more taxes. It is already happening in some states.
Judas Iscariot was with the other 11 disciples and Jesus for three years. They trusted him so much that they made him treasurer. Yet, when a woman anointed Jesus with a costly ointment of spikenard, Judas spoke up and said, “Why was not this ointment sold for 300 pence and given to the poor?” Sounds good, doesn’t it? Yet the disciple John said that he cared not for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and carried the money with him.
Both Democrats and Republicans want to control the bag (money) because the ones that control the bag control the government. That is why everyone has to keep their eyes wide open all the time, including those in government.
