Update: Man killed, two injured in crash on State Road 46 West

BELMONT — One person died and two others were injured after a two-vehicle crash on State Road 46 West Thursday morning.

Stephan S. Woods, 52, of Bloomington, died at the scene of multiple blunt-force injuries, said Brown County Coroner Earl Piper.

Jodi D. Adkins, 49, of Bloomington, was a passenger in a red Subaru with Woods when the vehicle was struck head on by a white Chevrolet Cruz driven by Joshua O. Cline, 26, of Bloomington.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. just east of Summers Place Trail in Belmont. Off-duty Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Magner was the first to arrive on scene at around 8:08 a.m. and requested a coroner to the scene at about 8:15 a.m., according to an incident report by Lt. Mike Moore.

Cline was out of his vehicle when Moore arrived, and Cline told Moore he did not remember what happened, the report states.

He said he works at a manufacturing company in Columbus and was on his way home to Bloomington when the crash occurred. He said he remembered driving then somebody knocking on his window trying to help him out of his car, according to the report.

A witness to the crash was the first to notify dispatch. The witness told police she was following Cline’s vehicle west on State Road 46 West and had witnessed the white car swerving for the last two miles before the crash.

She reported seeing the white car drive left of center into the eastbound lane, striking the vehicle driven by Woods head on.

Following the crash, the Subaru went over an embankment and into water.

Cline and Adkins were both transported from the scene by EMS for further treatment at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Indiana State Police were called to the scene to do accident reconstruction and 3D imaging, Southerland said. Lt. Mike Moore will be completing a report about the crash.

Magner went to the hospital for a blood draw on Cline, as is standard procedure on fatal crashes. The results of that test were not noted in the incident report.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Brown County (Nashville) and Jackson Township volunteer fire departments also assisted at the scene.

The highway was closed for more than four hours.
