Dorothy ‘Joan’ Honeay

Dorothy “Joan” (Barnes) Honeay, age 92, passed away Wednesday morning, May 2, 2018, at her home in Greenwood. She was a former resident of Brown County.
Joan was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Helmsburg, to the late Demaree and Hazel C. (Jones) Barnes.  She married John S. Honeay on Sept. 1, 1950, at the Unity Baptist Church in Brown County.  He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2015, after 64 loving and devoted years of marriage.
Joan was a 1944 graduate of Helmsburg High School and went to work as a secretary for Eli Lilly in Indianapolis for six years. Joan and her husband served in ministry for American Baptist Churches for over 50 years at New Washington Baptist Church, Liberty Center Baptist Church, Oakdale Baptist Church in Peru, Spencer First Baptist Church, Smith Valley Baptist Church in Greenwood and Bunker Hill Baptist Church. She was an enthusiastic pastor’s wife, serving her church family through her piano ministry and teaching Sunday school.
Joan had excellent homemaker skills that included crocheting, embroidery and vegetable gardening.  Her persimmon pudding was a favorite treat at family gatherings. Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and reading mystery novels.
Joan has been a member of Unity Baptist Church in Brown County since 1941, and a former member of the Helmsburg Order of the Eastern Star and various homemaker clubs.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Barbara (Harvey) Ranard of Brown County, Rebecca (John) Andrews of Bloomington, Teresa Hall of Greenwood and Julie (Tom) Miller of Bowling Green;  grandchildren, Amy (Tim) Blanton, Lori (Michael) Haggard, Rene Jackson, Andrea (Samantha) Sweatman, Melissa (Aaron) Driskell, Alicia Hall, Michael (Kimberly) Hall, Todd (Danielle) Hall, John (Nedra) Hall, Kellie Miller, Ginny (Jason) Althoff and Tony (Dani) Miller; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Gabe and Joanna Rumsey, Timothy (Karen) Woodard, Daniel Blanton, Seth and Mahayla Hall, Brianna White, Ella and Addison Driskill, Jaylynn Hall, Ava and Owen Miller, and Jaden and Justin Althoff; and great-great grandchildren, Mark and Nora Woodard.
Joan was preceded in death by siblings, Leona Kelso, Mary Mayhew, Bertha Barnes, Dalton Barnes and Maurice Barnes.
Chaplain H.E. Ranard (USN Ret.) and the Rev. Lee Snider will conduct a funeral service on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Unity Baptist Church Cemetery.
