Motorcycle driver flown out after crash

HELMSBURG — An Indianapolis man was flown to Methodist hospital and his passenger was driven to a Columbus hospital after they were both thrown from a motorcycle in Brown County last week.

The crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. June 30 at the intersection of State Road 45 and Railroad Road, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool.

Pool reported that the driver, Robert Smith, 50, of Indianapolis, was headed east on 45 when he ran of the road and went over an embankment before landing on the railroad tracks below. Both Smith and his passenger Alana L. May, 53, of Indianapolis, were thrown off the motorcycle. Neither was wearing a helmet, the report states.

Smith was taken by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital due to internal back, chest and neck injuries, the police report said.

Pool reported that Smith was having a difficult time breathing and it was almost impossible to get information from him or May because neither had any memory about what happened, the report states.

May was taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital for severe internal back, neck and chest pain, according to the report.

Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
