High-speed internet construction starts

Construction of the fiber-optic lines that will feed high-speed internet to Brown County has begun.

South Central Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corporation started work on Phase 1 of the SCI Fiber project in mid-June. That phase will make high-speed internet available to 3,754 homes in parts of Brown, Morgan and Monroe counties in early 2019.

Phase 1 includes northwestern Brown County near Waycross, around Lake Lemon, and some areas west of Nashville. A map of Phase 1 can be seen at https://join.sciremc.com/#Zones.

The project’s backbone is slated to be completed this winter. When finished, SCI Fiber will offer speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, the company reported.

SCI-REMC President and CEO James Tanneberger will speak to the Brown County Rotary Club about this project at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, July 5 at the Artists Colony Inn.
