Man arrested after hitting relative with metal pipe

PEOGA — A 36-year-old Trafalgar man was arrested after police say he hit a relative with a pipe and threatened to kill that person.

Curtis Shepherd was charged Dec. 13 with battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony, and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 29, when police were called to the 9400 block of Green Road. Shepherd allegedly hit a relative and left the scene in a car heading toward Peoga, according to a probable cause affidavit by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Rogers.

Police reportedly found the vehicle parked and unoccupied at Shepherd’s home in the 2400 block of West 900 South in Trafalgar. Rogers and Deputy Chad Williams spoke with the victim on Green Road while Lt. Mike Moore monitored the vehicle on West 900 South.

The victim said he was at the home visiting another relative when Shepherd showed up. He began yelling and accusing another woman there of stealing a phone from him. The woman denied stealing the phone. When Shepherd first arrived at the home, the victim and the woman said he jumped out of his car with a metal pipe and hit the victim on the top of his forehead and the side of his nose, the affidavit states.

The two fought on the ground before Shepherd got back into his car. He yelled that he would kill the victim and the other relative there if the victim left. He then parked in a neighboring driveway to intimidate the victim and force him to stay at the home, according to the affidavit.

Rogers reported seeing damage in the yard where Shepherd allegedly spun his tires before leaving. He also reported seeing a cut on the victim’s forehead, along with redness and swelling on his nose.

Greenwood police helped Moore arrest Shepherd on West 900 South.

Shepherd admitted to getting into a fight with the relative, but said it was a “minor scuffle.” He said he had slipped and fallen while getting out of his car on Green Road and that he did not remember much about the incident. He told police he did not remember hitting the victim and that he did not bring the pipe to the home.

He said he remembered seeing the pipe in the bed of the victim’s truck, but later denied it. Rogers reported seeing a small abrasion on the back of Shepherd’s head. Shepherd then began vomiting and was taken to the hospital by EMS.
