Free Dumpster Days offered later this week

Start loading up your trucks. Later this week, Keep Brown County Beautiful will be renting two Dumpsters for anyone in the county to use to get rid of their trash for free.

One Dumpster will be placed at the back of the Brown County Recycle Center at Old State Road 46 and Greasy Creek Road on Thursday evening, June 13, said Phil Stephens, director of the Brown County Solid Waste Management District. He’s unsure of the exact time that Knight’s will be dropping it off, but once it’s there, people can start filling it up.

Another Dumpster will be placed at the west entrance to the Cordry-Sweetwater lakes community at Sweetwater Drive. It will arrive around 8 a.m. Friday, June 14, Stephens said.

Once those containers are full, they’ll be hauled away, and that will be the end of this Dumpster Days, Stephens said.

This is the first time Brown County has done Dumpster Days, but it might not be the last. This round is being sponsored by the volunteer group Keep Brown County Beautiful and paid for with a grant from Cummins.

No tires, no paint and no hazardous materials can be put in the Dumpsters, Stephens emphasized. But if you want to get rid of an old couch, a mattress, or other things that might not fit in your regular trash, this is an opportunity to do it — first come, first served.

The Recycle Center does accept some large trash items during regular Recycle Center hours at its drive-up at Old 46 and Greasy Creek, so if you don’t get to the Dumpster quick enough, you might have another local option to get rid of your stuff for free. Here’s what the Recycle Center’s website says:

“Brown County Solid Waste can accept your appliances/scrap metal during normal business hours, Tuesday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your old appliances, water heaters, refrigerators, air conditioners, sheet metal, metal door frames, or anything that is metal. The items will be taken off of your truck or out of your car for free. Units containing Freon will be charged a Freon removal fee of $15.”

Cummins also is doing a free collection of certain recyclable/reusable items on Thursday in Bartholomew County. Click on this story to see the items accepted there.
