TOWN NEWS: New police station plans on hold

The Nashville Town Council can’t proceed right now with a plan to sell its old police station and buy the building across the street from Town Hall for a new one.

The offer the council made on the First Merchants bank building on Commercial Street was accepted, but it was contingent on the town selling its current police station on Hawthorne Drive, explained council President Jane Gore, who’s also a real estate agent.

The town had a buyer for the Hawthorne Drive building, but that buyer backed out on June 13, she said.

The town needed to close the deal by July 15, and with that building back on the market, she wasn’t sure that could happen.

Gore asked the bank building’s agent if the town could have a 60-day extension, but she hadn’t heard back by the time of the June 20 town council meeting.

The town is attempting to sell the police station at 200 Hawthorne Drive for $417,500, which is the average of the two appraisals that were done on the building. Any interested parties can contact Town Hall.

If the town can’t get the 60-day extension from the bank building seller, they’ll cancel the deal and stick with the police station they have.

The appeal of moving the police station to the bank building was that it was much closer to other government functions at Town Hall and that it contained a vault for items that have to be stored in that way.
