Reckless driver call results in chase, arrests

A report of a reckless driving on State Road 46 East from Bartholomew County on March 14 resulted in the arrest of two men police say were involved in an armed robbery in Edinburgh.

The 911 call came into Brown County dispatch just after 3 p.m. about a reckless driving westbound on 46 East from the Bartholomew County line, a press release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department states.

Shortly before receiving that call, dispatch received information regarding an armed robbery that had occurred at Gillman’s Hardware on US 31 in Edinburgh.

The vehicle information provided to dispatch about the reckless driver reportedly matched the description provided by the Edinburgh Police Department, the release states.

Deputies were dispatched to the area to locate the vehicle.

Deputies made contact with the vehicle, later identified as a 2008 Lexus RX350, in the 1700 block of State Road 46 East. Deputies advised the vehicle was traveling 79 mph in a 50 mph zone. After passing the deputies, the vehicle sped up to 136 mph.

After deputies activated their lights and sirens, the vehicle refused to stop and continued westbound on 46 East towards Nashville, according to the press release.

The vehicle continued into the CVS Pharmacy parking lot in Nashville where it struck a light pole and continued over the embankment behind the store before coming to a stop near Salt Creek.

After the crash, two men reportedly fled from the vehicle on foot.

Deputy Austin Schonfeld deployed K9 Kronin and began tracking the occupants from the scents located inside the suspect vehicle. Shortly after, K9 Kronin located the driver of the vehicle — later identified as Edward Cummings of Memphis, Tennessee — hiding in a drainage ditch near the Brown County Inn.

After searching the area for several hours and gathering information from multiple witnesses, another suspect — later identified as Alfred Davis of Memphis, Tennessee — was located near Hoosier Buddy Liquors.

Both suspects were taken to the Brown County Law Enforcement Center where custody was later transferred to the Edinburgh Police Department.

All currency located during the incident was turned over to the Edinburgh Police Department for their investigation.
